Magicians rope definition seems to change with availability. For the longest time, Tannens and D.robbins sold the cotton casing 1/4" over cotton strands (5). This is what most of what Tarbell, Pavel and the holdouts, linking ropes, and other classic were made of. The difference between the hardware store rope is that magicians rope has no starch, it is fairly natural in color as well, not pure white.
When Robbins stopped carrying it due to price increases, I started carrying the overruns from the Georgia rope companies. http://www.rope.ws is my site, but I sadly am out of stock until more overruns occur. The Italian rope or Euro rope seems to be what Daryl is using, I contacted him and he had said that he has trouble getting it as well. The so called flat ropes are merely round rope casings with no filler. They are flacid (pardon the expression) but good for cutting with great visibility. The replacement ropes are whatever dealers get deals on, the India rope is a loose weave cotton over cotton and also has a fermaldehide smell to it, I really don't trust the chemicals used. The colored ropes from India are a good consistancy and dyed pure white, red, and blue, but again, have the chemicals that are not quite U.S. approved. There are some acetate ropes that look good, but I have caloused fingers and always get caught on the fibers. Some of the better ropes are pricey, so I will wait for my over-runs 1/4" classic. Cost retail, about .10 a foot delivered.

Well Hello Magic Ian!
It was great visiting with you in Florida. And we never even mentioned rope! Georgia rope used to even be available on the sides of the road in fruit stands in Georgia in the 70s. The world has changed! (It was even cold in Florida!) You have a lot to offer the world of magic. Let us hear from you more often. Magic inventors are certainly welcome here. Some of these folks may recognize that a good lecturer can be had too! I enjoyed it. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander PS --- You're allowed a much larger photo too! |

Magic Ian,
Does this mean when you restock you will have full reels of rope available? Best, Tony

The thing about the Camirand rope is that it isn't super flexible. When I do Zander's Loose Ends there's not enough weight (for me anyway!) to flip the ends back and forth. The Camirand rope is limp. It takes more to flip it back and forth. The rope I currently use is like Camirand but it seems to have a core and makes it a little heavier. I just picked up some of Hank Lee's Fat Rope.
Haven't recieved it yet but I'll see how that feels. John |
