Hi...I have been doing kiddie and adult magic shows since 1988 for
kiddie parties, adult parties and events etc... ...but last night, I did my very first gig as a ventriloquist for an adult crowd via open mic...did some jokes that I usually do for my kiddie act but added some other jokes... I just want to ask for your ideas and points if view on "using kiddie script for an adult crowd" with maybe little modifications... I want a clean adult routine, meaning even if it's an adult crowd, I plan to do non offensive comedy, no swearing and no insults Insulting people is the usual style of comics here in Manila... (with the exemption of some people who are trying to make a new trend like the Improv Groups) I don't want to join that bandwagon... Why? My main bread and butter so to speak is "kiddie shows" ... I don't want folks seeing me one night in an adult show swearing and insulting people and then the next day in a kiddie party performing for their kids... Please let me know what you think...and I hope you can share your ideas. How will a kiddie routine work in an adult vent gig for nightclubs and adult comedy bars? Thanks Wanlu

Hi,
I'm very new to this section of the Café. I've always loved puppets, but never really had the oportunity to play with them until recently. I've not done vent for adults or kids (considering I'm only just learning), but I have performed my main stuff, escapes, for both kids and adults. I found that in an adult venue (say comedy club) you need adult material. By this I mean language you use will be different to that in a kids show. You can use more situation type comedy, and you can play with any spectators in ways that wouldn't be appropriate with kid volunteers. Your overall character could be pretty much the same, just tweek it slightly depending on whether you're doing all adults, all kids, or a family mix of the two. I hope this helps, Ros

I do both Kis's parties and shows for nursing homes. Two opposite ends of the age spectrum. Kids I do as Paddy The Clown, the adult shows are done as Prof. Paddy and his Ancient, Irish, Pain Killer medicine show. The script is a little different but the effects and the vent jokes are the same for both shows.

Have you thought about a puppet just for adult work. After all, if your vent is any good, the audience will remember the puppet making rude comments, not you. You can appear as shocked as anyone else.
Such a character would create a separation between your adult work and your kids shows. If "Little Boy Blue" swears his head off and makes suggestive comments, it only makes sense that you wouldn't bring him to a kids show. Conversely, if "Beautiful Bunny" is sweet and innocent then you probably wouldn't want him exposed to a comedy club anyway. See what I mean? Something to think about.
Magically yours,

Thanks Roslyn, Paddy and Flying Magus...
Flying Magus, you have a very good point. Expensive idea but a very good point I will most certainly think about it...might just get a figure exclusively for an adult crowd and the other figures for a kiddie or family event... I've seen John Pizzi and I love his adult act...it's hilarious to the max. I just don't like the idea of having the same figure do both acts for kids and adults... He was so good with his puppet that I don't want Andy anywhere near my kids the illusion of thinking that its actually Andy swearing and insulting the crowd has gotten into me...and to think that Im a vent myself, what more for the lay crowd. I don't mind having John Pizzi in my kiddie event but not Andy, I'm afraid Andy might say something similar to what he does in a adult comedy clubs I hope you get my point. Nothing personal against John Pizzi, I love the guy!!! and I love Andy!!! I REALLY DO! Thanks much!!!

A lot depends on you and your character and personal convictions. I do clean material in comedy clubs, both stand up and vent. The main thing is the topics you choose to do comedy about. You don't have to swear and if you don't swear in your personal life, it won't be natural for you to do it in your act either. Unless your stage character is significantly different, stick to being yourself and amplifying YOUR character.
Keep your setups short to increase the LPM's... no more than 3 short sentances before the payoff and if you can build one punchline on the next it's even better. Hope this helps, Gary |

Three sentences before the payoff? build a punchline after the next? Can you please give me an example I can't seem to figure this one out...
Thanks much for all your ideas my friends!!! Wanlu

You want as many laughs per minute as possible to be entertaining. This means keep the punchlines as close together as possible. Long setups by the vent keep the laughs too far apart. If you can keep your setup line(s) short (or the figures setup line short) you have more laughs per minute. If you can build one punch line on the other one without another setup line, you have even more laughs per minute. For example (from my standup bit):
I love being a diabetic... most people need to drink to feel that buzz... I get the same thing from Skittles... give me the family size bag and I'm loaded! Premise: I love being a diabetic Setup: most people need to drink to feel that buzz Punchline: I get the same thing from Skittles 2nd Punchline (topper without additional setup): give me the family size bag and I'm loaded! Not sure how this would translate to the Philippines... Skittles are a type of candy, etc. but hopefully you see the point. I have 2 short straight lines followed by a punchline which is followed by a second punchline which tops the first line. I use this in comedy clubs and get applause and big laughs. Doesn't read particularly funny, and acting and voice inflection has to sell it, but I hope this makes sense to you. I think if you watch Jeff Dunham, etc. you'll see that it isn't the old type of vent says line figure says line back and forth type act. Jeff says a straight line and Walter may talk for 3 or 4 lines before Jeff says anything. He just keeps building off what he's already said. Hope this helps, Gary |

Oh yes Gary..a very big help. Had another open mic today in a mall and did what you told me. Let him sit on my arm when I was entering the stage. It went well and made my figure looked a lot better made me feel a lot better too
Got your point re the set-up and punchline and stuff, I'll start working on it Thanks much Gary Wanlu

I've read both Jay Sankey's and Judy Carter's books on stand-up comedy, and although both have great info, I like the killer stand-up system better (which IMHO is the best literature available if you want to write killer stand-up materials).
The system can easily be adapted to vent acts. I highly recommend it. (By the way I'm not in any way connected with it business-wise ;o)) |

I have the killer stand-up material as well... bought both books from the guy I took the stand-up class from when he got a deal on the books and offered us a deal on it. Very good program and Steve Roy did a lecture at the Vent convention a few years back. A bit pricier than Judy's which is why I recommend Judy's for someone just starting to write their own material.
Still the killer stand-up system would be great for a magician or a vent act, especially if you like to write by sitting the figure on your knee and just starting to talk about a subject. I like the way you basically just start writing naturally and then go back and punch it up. Nice system and a way to come up with a lot of material in a relatively short period of time. |

Wow...things have changed a bit.
Im trying my first major adult vent act with Ony Carcamo this month. Ive decided to use a different figure/s for a Kidshow and a different figure for an Adult show. My Selberg and Carcamo for my Kidshows and my Payes for my Adult gigs. This makes sense to me I just don't find it comfortable for a figure to be in an adult show in the evening cursing and the next day in a kidshow besides, that wont be healthy for the figure... Thanks Wanlu
