Hey. My name is Jordan. Im almost 15. Ive been doing walk around for 2 years, performing magic since 8, and perform quiet frequently as my job. I need some advice. Ive decided I wanted to add a more of a street type show at the events like busking, where I draw in the crowed...its not required to attend deal. I want about a 20-30 minute routine but Im stuck. Here's some of my ideas.
Heres the effects I want to get in... -Egg bag routine(need to find a good one) -Do airborn as a gag -Close with somthing like Gazzos Cups and Balls. I need help comming up with a 20-30 minute routine. I would like the cups routine to finish but whatever works to go with. I need as much advice from anyone who knows any. Thanks Jordan |

20-30 minutes is a LONG time when you're starting out. Work on 10-15 minutes of ROCK SOLID material and do it twice as many times. As you get experience "working the crowd" the routine will naturally start to lengthen.

These guys are right. That is along time. Dan Tong's Egg Bag is probably one of the best I have seen. I am using it now and it is great. Get the videos from Dan. They are great.

Actually, Gazzo's routine only runs 5-10 minutes. It's Gazzo that fills the rest of the time.

Jordan,
Take a look at the finale other than cups and balls thread and read the advice given by suspectacts. It is pure platinum and should help you figure out what you are looking for just a bit better. I don't want to sound like the old man berating the young guy, but at 15, you aren't old enough to do Gazzo's lines without looking like a smart ***. You need material that fits you. Only you can write that.
Work out a good 25 minute show. Then throw out the weakest 10 minutes. Then you will have an excellent 15 minute show.

Bill,
great advice as usual. Often times we forget tht not every thing we do is strong. Also, knowing the ages that you are performing for is very very important. If you are primarily going to target adults make sure you can keep the kids engaged, and vice versa. Asgood way to build your edge is with children, and notthe unattended types...

But out of curiousity, how many people when they say they are "doing Gazzo's routine" mean they are doing the lines? I'm sure I'm being a little naive here, but when he first marketed the routine, I couldn't imagine anyone trying to do his lines. Not only are they "Gazzo-specific", they are very "venue-specific". What struck me about the routine is the placement of the hat load -- it has to be one of the BEST uses of the time misdirection technique in magic. Not only for the hat load, but perhaps even more so for the 6 load sequence of the cups. Trying doing 6 loads of 3 cups right after one another. Becomes transparent real fast. Gazzo's insertion of the hat load that point .. just brilliant. But back to the question of the post -- attracting a crowd and keeping them is about character, energy, interaction and the ever popular "bits of business". The tricks are just tools to achieve that. I know it's cliche, but it's true. One thing about the cups and balls -- though great for many venues, for other the low sight lines aren't favorable. With respect, DD |

If you want to do 30 min. 10+ min will be gathering your croud, and 5 min (hopefuly more) will be spent passing the hat. two very important parts of your show that have littel or no magic in them but you cant busk with out them.
I am droping cups and balls from my street show. I love cups, but being stuck behind a table just as I want to be the most visible I find counter productive. I am doing more roap and ring and roap stuff And I will be adding a 3 ring bit in the end. based on Chris Capehart's routine. Go with tricks you like, look at your space and work acordingly, go out and play have fun and you will learn what you need to know.
