I've registered the domain "effectgallery.com" and allocated 200GB of storage to it.
The site will host videos of magic effects. Oh No, not another one! More exposure, and more badly shot videos of magicians who only perform for web cams. Hopefully, it'll be a little different than that. This site is not attempting to be yet another outlet for YouTube magicians. The idea is that we will try to have only one video of each effect. We'll try to set fairly high standards on the quality of the video and, more importantly, the quality of the performance. If a video is uploaded that improves on an existing video for an effect, we'll replace the original video with the better one unless there is a good reason for keeping both, e.g. alternative presentation ideas. Access to the site will be limited to members only. A small number of sample effects may be visible by non-registered users, but the vast majority will require registration. We'll strictly enforce a requirement that effects are properly credited, and details of the source from which they can be learned must be provided with the video. The intention is that most of the videos will show performances of effects, rather than tutorials. Tutorial videos will be accepted for original material, where the uploader is the creator. Videos teaching someone else's work will not be permitted. Book Projects This idea sprung from discussions on The Magic Café about bringing together videos from a specific book, e.g. The Art Of Astonishment. This would be a useful resource for those studying the books, and might create interest in effects that don't read well and are overlooked. The general consensus was that such a project in an open forum like YouTube was a bad idea, as it would be more likely to be used by some as an alternative to buying the book. I think the effectgallery.com approach to Book Projects is a good one. Access to a Book Project, e.g. The Art Of Astonishment, will require even registered users to enter a password that will be known to anyone who has a copy of the book, e.g. the password is the 3rd word on page 72. Performer Portfolios I'll be making space available, free of charge, to any magician who wishes to upload a number of videos and have them grouped in their own portfolio. Rules regarding Technical Quality, Performance Quality, Crediting, etc., will still apply. I think this website could be a very exciting resource for magicians. The goal is not to compete with MagicVideoDepot, or any other site. MVD does an excellent job of allowing magicians of all skill levels to communicate and share videos within a thriving community. Effect Gallery serves a much more limited purpose, to capture polished examples of as many great effects and great performers as possible. The URL is http://www.effectgallery.com/gallery There are no videos to view yet. If you are interested in submitting videos, PM me. If you want to register, visit the site. Registration is not automatic; each registration needs to be approved, which might take a few hours. If there is no demand for this idea, I'll simply let the domain expire and take back the 200GB. The domain is registered for 1 year. So we'll see, then, if it will continue. Regards, -Richard Dalton |

Thanks to those of you who've signed up so far.
I've had one or two promises of videos, so I hope you have those up in the next few days. I will email all registered users and post some details here as soon as the Videos start appearing. Thanks Again, -Richard |

What is to keep someone from hijacking your videos and posting them on YouTube? I think that would be my only concern for this project, and I am anxious to see it succeed.

I had a sample video up earlier while I was testing, and it plays in the browser;
it's not a download. I haven't quite figured out whether it's possible to download them or not. But I'm fairly sure I can prevent it. |

I'm fairly certain that there will be no way of keeping someone from downloading the videos. There are free programs that will download video from any site, even if the site tries to prevent it.

I think this is a great idea. Before I purchase a book, I'll often check on MagicVideoDepot and see if there are any demos for its effects. I picked up "Dear Mr. Fantasy" after seeing several great examples from it.

I am not worried about exposure, as these videos are mainly performance videos. I am worried about the hoards of amateurs who love to blurt secrets on comments, as if it made them empowered.

ToasterofDoom,
There are always risks. We can only try to deal with those risks as best we can and hope for the best. Currently, the only real outlets for Magic Videos are YouTube and MagicVideoDepot. If I can put it this way...YouTube is the street, the videos can be made by anyone and seen by anyone, and the quality can vary widely. MagicVideoDepot is the world's biggest Magic Club Jamming Session. By and large, only magicians are watching, and the skill of the performers varies wildly from polished performances to works in progress to downright awful. Just like your local magic club. EffectGallery will be more like a magic convention. The performances should be high quality. The membership will be much smaller than MVD, and hopefully those that become members will have been involved in magic long enough to have learned how to respect other people's work. For what it's worth, the videos are not being stored in a directory that is accessible on the web. This will provide some level of protection, but it's far from fool proof, and someone with a bit of skill who is determined will find a way. I'm open to suggestions from anyone about protection ideas and features that we can build in. I have disabled comments and rating for the time being, but I might look at enabling that later. Let's get some videos uploaded, and see where it goes from there. If anyone is interested in being one of those who reviews potential videos and gives them the thumbs up or the thumbs down, drop me a PM. -Richard |

Why not simply not allow comments? Much better anyway. Though text is small, hundreds of thousands of messages add up.
Just skip the feedback. That would actually be different from what's out there. It's only a place to see, not speak. Not to mention the easier admin of the site. If you must have some way of commenting, just set up a catch-all email and, every month or so, browse the comments and post a read-only board.
Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed and Tommy Emmanuel are all you need to study to learn to play guitar.

Thumbslinger,
I'm inclined to agree. I haven't enabled comments or ratings, as I was going to see how things went before doing so. I'll play it by ear. Of course, until we get some videos, it's a moot question. -Richard |

How long does it usually take before you decide if a member is registered?

May I ask why is everyone paranoid about a video being copied from his site and posted somewhere else? As he has stated, it is a performance video, not a secret releasing video. He is reviewing them, so it is not like one will pop on there by mistake, exposing how a trick is done. Are people afraid of having there really good performance seen elsewhere??

Ummm...what about the authors who wish to reserve video/TV performance rights to their works? Would you keep track of these authors and their effects to preclude performance? How would you know what vids to censor without reading every book out there, knowing every trick? Just curious.

Now, only if this project could get some baseline videos! Perhaps you should take clips from YouTube.

Registered and interested, I'm looking forward to seeing some videos up there.
What's the feeling about those who create effects using the site to show buyers the effect? A demo video thing.

Hi All,
I set up the basic Gallery using a photo album tool called Gallery. I've found it to be good in the past, and I've used it for video. So far about 30 people have registered, which isn't bad considering there isn't a single video on the site. I've just had a promise to send our first video, so I'm looking forward to that. A quick update here, there has been some interest in incorporating this video gallery into another magic website. I can't discuss what that website is, but if it happens, there will be an announcement about it early in the new year. I've spoken to the people behind the other website, and they are on exactly the same page as me as to the need to do this right. If it happens, it will be a really exciting development. To anyone who has already registered on effectgallery.com, if we merge it with the other site, your account will work, and you'll be given full details of everything that's happening. Now, to answer a few questions: Quote:
How long does it usually take before you decide if a member is registered? It should only take a matter of hours. However, over Christmas and the last week or so, I haven't been checking for new users as actively as I was in the past because there still aren't any videos for them to see. Quote:
What about the authors who wish to reserve video/TV performance rights to their works? Would you keep track of these authors and their effects to preclude performance? How would you know what videos to censor without reading every book out there, knowing every trick? Just curious. This is an excellent question, and believe you me, it's one I'm trying hard to find the best possible answer to. The simple answer is that any author/originator/copyright holder will have absolute last word as to whether a video of one of their effects will be displayed. Where the creator is alive, we'll do our best to contact them and ask permission. If we can't contact them, we may put the video up, but it will come down immediately if the creator objects to it. Note: a creator might not have ruled out TV performance, etc., when selling an effect, but might object to the way the trick is performed. We need to accept that, by it's nature, a permanent archive of magic video may not have been in the minds of creators when they first released an effect. I think if we are going to engineer a shift in the way video clips and magic interact, then we need to start out erring on the side of the creators and take it from there. Quote:
Now, only if this project could get some baseline videos! Perhaps you should take clips from YouTube. I'm reluctant to "take" anything from YouTube, although there are certainly a few clips there that I think are of an acceptable quality. If the video makers wish to submit them, I'll include them. Initially, I think we'll be a victim of the high standards we are setting, but I think, in the long run, this project will succeed, and the standards we set now will pay off. We really are very close to something really exciting here. I hope it comes off. I'll post here as soon as I have more information. -Richard |

Someone stole "expertmagician"...copycat. That's a shame. I have only announced this here, and I hoped people would register with their Magic Café handle. Unfortunately, it's not something I can control. -Richard Posted: Dec 29, 2006 12:24am ---------------------------------------- Thanks to Spellbinder for submitting the first video. (By the skin of your teeth, the second submission arrived minutes later.) Spellbinder submitted a short clip of a sponge ball move. It's not a full routine, but it's certainly sufficient to test the technology. I've added some titles and credits and some music (public domain, so no copyright issues). I'd like to find a way of having a standard level of credits, so that the videos are consistent. Let me know what you think of what I did with this one. Also, any thoughts on moves vs. routines? There's probably a place for both. There are certain moves that are worth seeing in isolation, but my general feeling for a project like this is we should strive to upload complete performances. When you see Spellbinder's video, I think you'll know what I mean. I desperately want to see him do two or three minutes with those sponges. I'm working on getting the second video up. It's a complete routine from a stage act. Remember again, I want to get some competition going here. The aim is to only keep the one best example of a given routine or effect. I want inclusion of a performance to be a real badge of honor. But for the moment, you're not up against much competition, so contact me if you've got videos. -Richard |

I just submitted another piece to my sponge ball routine - the Hand Bag and Sponge Balls. I prefer to NOT show the complete routine, but only bits and pieces, so that someone putting together a sponge ball routine could select from various parts to make his or her own full routine. So, I'd also be interested in hearing from people as to which is "the best" approach.
For example, I think separate videos showing various coin vanishes would be more useful to a magician. Then, you could pick and choose which one or ones you want to really study and learn. However, it would be really difficult to show a coin routine that consisted ONLY of coin vanishes, one after another, each done with a different technique. But that's my theory, and perhaps this is a good way to test it out. I appreciate Richard's work in adding the credits, which give some helpful information about where you can learn the trick for those who want to pursue it further. However, adding credits to each video is a lot of work for him, and it might be easier and just as effective to have that part included with the text describing the video.
