Is the threat of violence as great as some people make out?
I would think most people would just leave the game if they thought they were being cheated. Do you think it could be just as dangerous to accuse someone of cheating at cards, guilty or not, than just keeping quiet and excusing yourself from the game? Has anybody here been caught cheating and got in to any serious trouble? |

Depends on what kinda game your playing in. If someone thinks your cheating theres not much that can be done about it.
Unless they happened to be someone on this forum and were 100% sure what they just saw. If I saw someone cheating I would simply out cheat them. Im not really big on beating someone up. seems kinda dumb.
you can fool all of the people some of the time and some of the people all the time but never all of the people all the time.

Anything can happen... I wouldn't try cheating in a game unless you are absolutely sure you know what you are doing.

I know a guy who was a famous dice cheater in memphis for decades and he slipped up when he was in his 50's and was shot dead. and he was a champion! I am a cheater and I have been cheating for over 25 years and I have had violence maybe twice and both occasions were minor. I got beat up by 3 guys one time and I got hit in the head with a bottle the other. no big deal either time. I had made hundreds of thousands of dollars. so it was worth it to me.

http://www.jimswain.com/video/counthi.wmv ... here is a discussion about card counting.. I don't have to remind you that card counting is not cheating, and it is not illegal.

"Caught cheating at cards = violence?"
Like the others have said with regard to cheating, it could be as simple as one person who is suspicious leaving the game quietly, no one willing gamble with you anymore, or the other extremes - serious physical injury and/or death. If you think you are being cheated, the best solution may be just to leave the game quietly... starting an argument seems to quickly lead to violence these days. Of course there's always like sodman12 mentioned of being able to out cheat the cheater, but that too can lead to problems (violence). Often times the biggest difficulty is not winning the money, but being able to leave with it. The main thing is to use good judgement. |

In the games that I play in there is so little chance that I will be caught that its not even on my mind.
I and put the deck underneath the table and no one would say anything most of the time. The game are usually for fun with little money to lose or gain(less than 100) so it really depends on the games that you play in.

I have a friend of mine who is a great pool shooter. but he insists on always challenging people as good as he is. my philosphy is if you r a lion and you get hungry don't go looking for a tiger to eat get you a deer. this is what I do. I as a lion don't look for tigers I look for a deer. with so many deers(easy marks) why do some people have to go looking for a darwin ortiz to gamble against? lol

Rudolph Wanderone, a very fat man, called himself Minnesota Fats. He was known as New York Fats, and Brooklyn Fats, or just Fats. People say that he had probably never been to Minnesota. Then the movie (and book), The Hustler came out, and Fats said that the movie was about him. And he began calling himself Minnesota Fats. Walter Tevis, the author of The Hustler (as well as The Color of Money, The Man Who Fell To Earth, and the Queen's Gambit) denied that the book was about Mr. Wanderone. He said that he made up Minnesota Fats and Fast Eddie. Tevis was upset about Wanderone stealing the name from his book and movie.
Fats was not a particularly good pool player, not of tournament pro caliber. He said he was the best. He said that he had never lost a game. He said a lot of things, and he said it loudly. He put on a good show, and he was good for the game. He is in the BCA Hall of Fame, not for his pool, but for his promotion of the game. For this, he deserves his place in the Hall of Fame. He was the best and funniest show in pool. And he was pretty good at making bank shots. I was just wondering Memph, you don’t happen to be related to Fats do you? :)

Depends on who you're dealing with. In my old neighborhood you had to be aware that anything could happen. Cheating and even the suspicion that you cheat could be deadly. Add alcohol and drugs to the mix and chances of violence were pretty good.
A good friend of mine was stabbed to death when accusations started flying during a card game. Argument ensued and when push came to shove he was killed. Another was beaten unconscious after a pool game at a bar. He was never the same after that. I'm not a gambler but the local guys I hung with back in the '70s often played poker with a dozen or more guys. Minimum bet was a buck and the pots got pretty big at times. These guys were cool. It was when guys from another turf came in that arguements would heat up. |

Truthfully in certain games cheating is not a prerequisite to violence.
In some games you can't get a dirty look for cheating. LOCATAION LOCATION LOCATION.

Tommy the stuff you just wrote about fats isn't original its something you read somewhere cause I read it also. tommy let me tell you something. I have never had a job a year in my life. I have made 50,000 in 1 day. I have owned many new cars and big houses. I have been in the streets all my life. I was a pimp with 2 hookers at age 17. I have been shot in the face point blank, run over, I am a real street hustler tommmy. I have pimped and hustled from new york to seattle, atlanta to san diego. welcome to the real world! and by the way, if minnesota fats was such a poor pool player how did he make his living? or did he have a job and was a fake like some other people I know!

Minnesota Fats was not a poor player but he did not have to be good because he had a brain. Calling himself Minnesota Fats and telling the world he was the greatest was his con. I assume he earned money doing shows and fixed matches. It’s not the guy who wins the most games who is the greatest, it’s the guy who gets the most money. It’s not original, it’s just a fact.
An idiot like you could not hustle a dime. Pimps by the way are Vermin and should all be shot, point blank in the face and run over. I am only sorry that, who ever did it to you, were not using a bigger gun and driving a faster car.

That hole in his face is what he most likely pimps because he don’t know he’s got a hole in his ass. I don’t know if that makes it a hustler or a sucker, or both, but whatever this Memphis Bell is selling, I ain’t buying it.
