Hiya, Magi:
I had a great time performing a couple hours of Strolling Magic last Friday night at a banquet center, DESPITE being stalked by a guy whose sole purpose was exposing the moves! Okay, okay, so my moves should be undetectable (surprise! sometimes they're not). And he nailed me on a transposition...ONCE. But then he began FOLLOWING me, telling others to "watch his HANDS, watch his HANDS!" (Funny, when I hit him with a couple of serious foolers, he said nothing...although his friends let him have it!) Anybody else get this kind of reaction? What have you done? And yes, alcohol was a factor...in his behaviour, not my performance!!! Leland |

I am an in your face confrontational kinda guy. I love to work in the round, I am at my best when challenged, and it sure sounds like you had fun last Friday night. How did that cruise ship gig go? Were you stalked by any lonely women? Al Angello

I get these guys every now and then. Usually, I will just cut my set short and go talk to them man-to-man. When I explain that I am trying to make a living here and that he is ruining everyone elses' good time, they will usually apologize and stop.

Saturday night I was doing a strolling gig at a 65th birthday, there was 3 little boys who wouldn't stop following me. They said after the 5th ambitious card "we know how you did that!" and I hit them with the old "so do I, but I get paid for it!"
also, I leave business cards on each table after each trick.....and the little terrors were going round collecting them up!!! I told them they had to make sure every adult got one....and low and behold they did, and I got a booking today! result! |

I once had a drunk young lady at a party embarass herself, her boyfriend and his parents by saying "I know how you did that" after every trick. She couldn't very well refuse when I asked her to help me with the sponge balls, and I did a standard routine. She was just as shocked as anyone that night when she opened her hand to find two sponges. It was a polite and entertaining way to undermine her credibility, if she had any.
Then I turned her into a frog. Ooops...meds wearing off again! |

Lastnight I had a youngster at a strolling gig very loudly state..." I now what you are going to do" and then proceed to tell everyone.
I then proceeded to use the same props to execute a different trick. was he ever stunned....

Even at major events (unless it's th ceo) I get the rare person trying to expose me.
Iether they are ego people or they are drunk- whatever the case- I pull them aside and tell them I'm here to entertain people and I can't do that when you reveal everything- when you are around I will not be performing. So the next time I go up to a group I perform a flashy visual opener- and then I stop- saying sorry folks I can't perform with this guy here. He gets the message |

Hiya, Magi:
Thanks for the input...the confrontational style makes a lot of sense; I may see about modifying it for use in my own work. I've already got the confrontation part down, I just have to tweak it for Magic... Al- the cruise is coming up in December. Any lonely women stalking me then had best be sporting body armour, as my wife will not hesitate to do some serious "confronting" of her own! Leland |

On the occasion that this problem arises, 9 of 10 times the person was or is an amateur magician. I have never been able to stop them as they are on a quest. Even when you know that they don't know how you did it, you can't win unless you expose the trick in order to prove them incorrect. Since that is not going to happen I find that a quick talk with the host will stop the problem.
The one time that it worked like a charm, was at at corporate holiday party. The host after hearing of the problem looked at me and said "you keep doing the great job you are doing & I will put a stop to the problem" It stopped after that. At the end of the show, the client then said "sorry about that jerk, you will be back next year but he won't" I was back for the next two years but the jerk was not. I was very happy with the result. |

After reading this thread, for the holiday season I'm going to bring an emergency packet of tricks that use unconventional moves, in order to protect myself from such a jerk. This is the kind of fight we should never loose. If there were a fellow juggler in the crowd I would be able to spot him instantly, because he would be the one cheering, and clapping the loudest (juggling is a different kind of brotherhood). I refuse to let an amature magician outsmart me. THANKS FOR THE HEADS UP Al Angello

You can always say, " here is a hand full of fairy dust..... GO make yourself disappear..."
hehehe No really the best way is to laugh make a joke of it and move on.... If kids are following me, I simply state, "You are more then welcome to follow me but....SHHSHHSHSHSH do not ruin the surprise for anyone okay?" Then a high five or two....
