I am considering using some background music while I am talking to my puppet. I've tried this a long ago but it doesn't seem to work. Right now, I don't use any background music, just me and my puppet.
Do any of you vents, use music while you're with your puppet?

I'm a beginner in vent work, but in all my years, I can't recall musical background during a vent act. I would think the music would almost have to be timed to match your dialog. What I mean is like rim shots right at the punch line of the joke. I suppose if you are doing a story telling type act, say a Christmas theme and your partner is telling the story, then the background music would fit well. But a standard give and take routine between the vent and his partner does not seem to lend itself to background music to me.

I'm developing a routine around music, where my figure, Dodger, claims to know a lot about music and comes from a musical family. This leads me to play selections of famous music for him to identify. I've written the piece but I haven't performed it yet.
I have seen many ventriloquists use live or recorded music to back up their and their figure's singing. Russ Louis, Dave Pendleton, Ron Lucas, Pete Michaels, Lynn Trefsger(sp?), Bill Boley, Dave Turner... to name just a few. All of the above used musical accompaniment not background music. I haven't seen anyone playing background music while talking. |

Me and my puppet sing together with music, but I don't think that is what you are meaning. Like Oliver said, it isn't really background music when used this way.

I was thinking of soft music playing while we are in a conversation. I've tried several times, but it doesn't really seem to fit.
Just like Regan, I only use music when my puppet and I sing a song which is at the end of routine. On another note, Oliver's idea is good. It could be a guessing game of "name that tune" and the puppet could give funny and wrong titles / lyrics to it. This could be used in themed parties. Songs used will depend on the party's theme.

Hi Olivertwist,
I do that "Name that tune" in one of my party games...its really fun. I do it with the moms vs the dads. I have three categories, 80's hits...movie theme songs and kiddie theme songs. How do you plan to use it with the dummy It's very interesting Thanks Wanlu

The routine I've come up with uses well known classical pieces and the figure misnames them in funny but reasonable ways. It is geared to an adult audience because children won't know the tunes or the composers. It'll tie in with standard wood jokes like...
F: "My sister plays in the Boston Symphony" V: "Really that's great. What instrument?" F: "Cello" V: "Wow!, Your sister palys the cello in the Boston Symphony?" F: "No. She is the cello". After he's claimed to know a lot about music then I quiz him with name that tune. The tunes and jokes in that bit are completely original and I'm not ready to give them away. A lot of it will work with children even though some of it will be funnier to adults who know classical music. I plan to try it out in December. We'll see how it goes. Oliver |

Thanks, Wanlu. I like your idea on using name that tune as a party game. I can see lots of possibilities there.

Oh yes...its a great game sir. Here are some nice photos of moms and dads having fun in that game
http://www.miumu.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php......ilippine BTW, the idea of using it in an adult game for a birthday party came from a good friend and party host in Manila, Sugus Legaspi. I changed the mechanics of the game to fit my own style...changed the rules and prepared three different tune categories instead of just one. By preparing three different categories, the game can be used with basically different kinds of people (age groups e.g. teens, senior citizens, children etc) Using it in a vent act is more challenging and I just can't figure out how

Along with music sound effects can add to a routine.
I also use a mosquito whistle, harmonica and other mouth noises. The world is alive with the sound of muzak.(sic) Harris
