You really just have to be observant. I've done a couple of shows for the elderly. Some of the people won't be able to hear, and some won't be able to do much. However, for the most part, they can still do what you ask them too. They can still shuffle cards, remember what you want them to remember, follow instructions, ect. The one big problem that I ran into was that some of the people simply couldn't hear everything I had to say. Other then that though, they were like many other audiences I have performed for.

I did a few through the Cincinnati Recreation Commission in my 'barnstorming' youth. At one I met a "Mr. Rice," who turned out to be the father of the 'Silk King.'

Terminology varies from state to state. The main thing is not to assume that just because someone is 65+ that he or she is in a state of dementia. The kind of facility will determine to a large degree what kind of audience member you can expect.
There are facilities in Texas in which part of the residents are ambulatory and do not require a nurse's care. Other residents are in need of constant supervision. Normally, patients with different levels of care are housed in either different areas or on different floors. Some of the 85 year olds can shuffle cards better than 95% of the people on this forum. When you spend 16 hours a week playing bridge, you learn things about cards that most people never learn. The main thing is to be observant and be respectful.

As an aside, I have a DVD with Eugene Burger where he shows an effect using cards in the form of a tombstone. He talks about a nightmare involving those tombstones where his name suddenly appears on the tombstone, which he then shows. The name disappears and then reappears, but now includes a date as well. The effect finishes with him saying that when you tell other people your nightmares, you pass them on to them...... pleasent dreams......
Burger then says he once saw a friend of his perform this in front of a group of older people. Not all effects are suitable for all groups, and not everyone can get away with something like that! |

I have done a few elderly homes. It was fun and they had a blast. To tell you the truth I was hired on a theme of "To be young again". I did my full kids shows for them and it was a hit. The first time I was requested to do one like that I was scared to death. Then before the show I was talking to them and some remember seening Blackstone Sr in the days. Oooo man... Blackstone Sr. Well I did my best and pulled it off. They have ask me to come back every year since.
I would say that doing an elderly group is like doing kids. They have just as much spirit as the kids. If you don't have a lot fun you will lose them. ~B-Rad
