Just a question out of curiousity. What's considered a good selling dvd? How large is the market for magic dvd's? What's the best selling magic dvd/video ever?

Good selling, depends on the market.
For general magic, anything over 1000 is my estimate. Saying that, the people who could shed light on this are the manufacturers and wholesalers. Anything else is just conjecture. |

A good selling DVD: I agree with you, Tony. Probably anything over 1,000 is pretty good.
How large is the market? My guess would be over 20,000 worldwide (there are nearly 28,000 Café members...that's a good indicator) In terms of best of all time, my guess is probably Michael Ammar's Easy to Master Card Miracles series, especially the first 6 volumes. --- Kaylan |

I think it all depends upon who the DVD is marketed too. For instance Jaw Droppers is not designed to be sold to magicians and in fact could be the best selling video(s) of its kind.
Wizard School by Andrew Mayne could also fit in here. Any magic related DVD with an ISBN number I am sure has sold over a couple thousand. I may be off but with an ISBN number it opens the market up to many more people. |

You would be surprised with how many dvd's are really sold and how many are bootlegged! it just kills the guys who produce these.......i wont go into numbers but I will say this, theres a lot of these things being produced and many are not very good.....its amazing to me as a full time performer how many of these dvd's are overlooked...and which ones sell really well...it seems that the "new" david blaine cutting edge magic that you see on sites like e do better then the stuff that is produced by guys that really do magic for a living...real world doesn't sell as well as the cutting edge stuff.....
I wish that people out there wouldn't bootleg and respected the artists lifes work...but they don't, a lot of us beleive that they have the right to just take it because they cant afford to buy it its a shame |

Tony, you are correct. While 1000 dvds in a real-world industry is horrible, in our cottage industry, 1000 and over is considered quite good.

Koz,
I said mine was mearly conjecture, you know much more. You're involved in the industry. I think we all agree that the people who copy, the people who put them up on the net, and the bootleggers are a major problem. But they are not the major problem. If we, the consumers act with personal ethics and purchase from reputable dealers, such as yourself, the problems will vanish. But as long as there are members of our community that believe they should get it for nothing, or not have to pay the retail price, there will be a market for the criminal action that steals from all of us. On a personal note, I agree with you on the quality issue as well. You already know this as you keep sending me DVDs. Tony |

I would agree on the bootleg damage when it comes to common music and movies.
As for specialized items like magic, somebody who buys a copy-dvd would probably not buy the real thing. So they are actually a different customer group that are normally not accessible for us. WIth some luck and education, they can be migrated into the right side . . . creating a new customer pool Andy

Tony, I love you man!
andy,it would be nice if you could figure out the way! its amazing but I have friends that offer to send me bootlegs...can you believe it...i believe that there is maybe 5 times as many bootlegs as bought dvd's....and some of those would buy the product if they didn't have a way to copy them...this is a big thing even in our little industry...in the music industry bootlegs and downloads kill music careers, music stores and music producers... heres a question, how many of you guys here get a trade magazine like magic or genii every month?... give me a I get it or I don't so I can keep a tally? |
