I recently received a framed Houdini poster. The person who gave it to me said it was rare.
I'm skeptical, but how could I go about determining whether it is an authentic vintage poster? Derek Merdinyan |

Send me a quick scan and I might be able to help. If I know it was something that has been reproduced, we can probably stop there. Otherwise, Norm Neilsen could give you some tips.

Well, then, let's just stop there - this is just another "Houdini King of Cards" poster.

If it has Lee Jacobs Productions rubber stamped on the back, it is a reproduction.

Lee Jacobs reprinted a couple of Houdini posters. He made them a little different in size than the originals, so people could tell which ones were which.
Posted: Apr 5, 2007 12:58pm One of the problems with vintage posters is that there are so many forgeries out there that are basically unidentifiable as such without doing a destructructive test of the paper. At the Collector's Weekend in Las Vegas a couple of years ago, some of the casual conversation turned to the fact (not speculation) that an unscrupulous person could send a photograph of a famous poster to people in China and have it reproduced for a pittance compared to what it would bring at auction. They can do hand work over there that looks like the real thing from Strobridge. There is also the question of some of the copies that are being sold now. The first purchaser knows they are copies, but if they aren't marked as such, no one else does. There is a federal regulation concerning reproductions that says that they are to be stamped or otherwise marked with the word "copy," but this is not always done.
