Simon Lovell’s “Packet Killer” Double-DVD and Deck Package
As a rule, I try to stay away from DVD reviews. Also, though Simon Lovell has been a great friend for many, many years—when I do review, I tend to stay away from Simon’s material as some will quite wrongfully assume that my words would be tainted when discussing a product that stars a friend of mine. My pen is not for sale. However, “Packet Killer” is a product that begs to be reviewed. I have several dresser drawers full of little marketed effects that I’ve collected over the last 35 years or so—the amount invested would astonish most people that have not taken the same path. It is difficult for me to assign a dollar sign to a piece of Magic, though—purchase price is meaningless when what you care about is baffling your audiences in order to entertain them. There are several routines that I’ve used over the years that cannot be priced, or replaced for that matter. First of all, “Packet Killer” is a knock-dead, amazing, no-brainer, outstanding value. MacDonald’s Aces, B-Wave, Twisted Sisters, Wild Card, the list goes on and on—and you get performance demonstration and step-by-step instruction on all of these—and much, much more. Not only does Simon give you the proper history of these effects (and more), but he gives you the original routines in many cases (which you may find more performable than the so-called improvements), augmented by Simon’s own handling refinements. Not only that, you get full-blown routines further enhanced by Simon’s own routining, patter, and presentation both performed and explained. Not only that, you won’t have to move a muscle to find beautiful, factory US Playing Card gaffs to make them all happen. You get them all, and again—a whole lot more. The Deck supplied alone is a tremendous bargain all by itself, if it was supplied with nothing at all. That you get both knock ‘em dead classic routines and contemporary treatments makes it a bargain of bargains. The twin DVD set alone rates a bargain in my book, even if nothing further was supplied. If this sounds like a bit of a rave review; it is only because it is. Take a DVD set that rates a “best buy,” add a deck that rates a “best buy,” and you have one of the most insanely good values in the card magic scene today, if not ever offered. Students of card magic will quickly realize that if this product is viewed as a tool, it is the “Snap-on Master Professional Inch, Metric, and British Standard” card worker’s tool bag that is invaluable for anyone who wants to do effective card magic. It is all laying there for you, regardless of your skill level. It is effective “instant magic” as is. With a little effort on your part, you can personalize many of these routines to make them a part of you. Like most things, the more you put into it—the more you’ll get out of it. This set, and a copy of “EXPERT CARD TECHNIQUE” to cite but one classic text, gives you all you need to make a living as a close-up performer. There is no such thing as “easy to master;” the concept of being a master prohibits that. What “Packet Killer” is greatest bargain in card magic today—nothing else is even close. Get a set from Simon Lovell while you can. Bargains of such tremendous, lasting value don’t come along like this very often. I don't sell them, I had nothing to do with this project at all. I can tell you this-- you will thank me for calling it to your attention, though. It would be negligent of me if I did not mention it! Simon Lovell get the award of pulling together the best bang for the buck in card magic today-- and any number of these effects are some wildly good, impressive bangs. You'll learn where these miracles came from, Simon shows you how to blow their minds with them, and gets you on the right path to get the most out of them. Congratulations to Simon Lovell. |

Sorry about your 'blush': at least you're not pining for the fjords. Best of all is the cover . . . it is either an impish Jerry Andrus, or an out-take from the "Wizard of Oz," I really can't say which one for sure. More likely, the Cowardly Crow, the Tin Western Singing Hamster, and the Scare-shark are involved. As well as Simon, and his little hedge-hog too. I mean, "Too-Too." That's a Clint Eastwood vs. Ballerina Dancer kind of thing.
The universal appeal to Matthew Field is built-in: not a crinkly , crumpled up Simon at all of Field fame-- instead the dapper, crackly, frothy, smartly suave Simon is the one on the DVD's. The Vole can rest easy. |

Thanks Randy. I've wanted to get this DVD when it was first released. Your review made me realize how good a deal this is. I just ordered. Thanks for releasing so much for so little Simon.

Some are the best gaffs I've seen are by Gary Plants-- $20 a card, depending, and worth every penny.
In the 35 years I've been in magic, poker-size gaffs have not been available for amything approaching this value. Like a lot of people, I have a $1000 "Emerson & West" collection on crummy, bridge-sized, finish-less pasteboards. Gaffs can be devastating if used with restraint . . . but, most of my immense, costly, yet valueless collection looks like the dogs played with them by comparison to this deck. Back in the 70's, it was just not generally available-- regardless of price. The only way to try to ask a question back then was to write a letter and put a stamp on it, or take a bus to Chicago-- and hope. |

Friends . . .
I finally got the DVD and the deck. I have to say that Randy is absolute right - this is a bargain. The deck is well assorted and offers material for many nights of routine planning and creating . . . Well done Simon for pulling together such a great offer. The DVD is very well produced. I initially was taken aback by the fact that it seems to be targeted at beginners. But once that was settled in my mind, I actually enjoyed the show and Simon's humor. Thanks Simon Andy
