I agree with both of you guys completely. The point of a magic show is to entertain lay audiences first, armchair magicians second, and semi-pros and pros as an afterthought.
My wife and family were only lukewarm to it, though. My wife came in after the first commerical break, and never really got into it. I kind of had to drag her back to watch the first couple of effects when I played them back for her--she seemed to enjoy those more. I'm glad to know other non-magicians enjoyed it more. Maybe I've just made the woman sick of magic. We'll find out when I see what's under the Christmas tree ("Socks, huh? And a socket set? I didn't see these effects advertised in Genii!"). |

Hey there guys, I am happy you agree with me. I was chatting with Eric Buss about the special(he was on there chatting in several shots) and has also been hearing mixed reactions. I told him my comments about my friends liking the show and he was really happy. Magic specials for the most part are not for magicians. I know I know...."if I did it or were in it it would have been so much better"...BLAH BLAH BLAh. I applaud them for making it happen and I hope it gets picked up for a run of shows. Brian

I find the differences between the responses here and on the Genii forum to be interesting. Why do you think that is?
But, knowing several of the performers, I would encourage people to not judge someone by a televised appearance. When you go on a program like this, you have no idea how much or how little will be used. You do not know how they will lead into you or the context in which you will be performing. Before the show aired, I know several were concerned that things would not look as good as they possibly could. That is the reality when you sign up for something in which you do not have creative control. However, I have hired both Armstrong and Goldenhersh to work for events that I have coordinated for REAL people. They KILLED. Andrew's performance even brought one layperson to tears...in a good way. I have watch Armstrong slay rooms at the Castle. His bumbling style is endearing to the audience, however I can see how a short segment may make him look a little clueless. So, having mixed feelings about the show is more than resonable. However, I encourage you to reserve judgement on the individual performers and their acts until you have the chance to see them do what they do in the manner in which it was intended to be seen. Truthteller,
Great comment about reserving comment on performers until you've seen their entire act. Jon Armstrong has a very funny character that he's developed for himself. Unless you've seen his entire set, you can't imagine how funny and disarming the act can be. I've had the pleasure of seeing Jon and Andrew Goldenhersh perform quite a few times at the castle, and each time they've killed. Taking small snipets from their acts really diminishes the impact they have on audiences. Believe or not, Jon's "um's and ahs" are part of the script and an important part to his overall character. If you ever get the chance, check them out. You won't be dissappointed. Ken |

I have learned NOT to judge performers from small TV appearances.
Few can really translate magic, let alone "their charector" in such a small segment. Which I feel is the failing of most of those shows in the first place. We spend such little time with these people, that we hardly get to know them and BAM another is on. It is NOT the performer or their inability, it is the medium being very difficult to trancend. That being said, I know many many many non magicians who were very luke warm to the special.

Having been on television more than once I can say there are so many factors involved with what winds up on a show that you guys should cut some slack to the performers. There's a tendency to belive that every TV show is well thought out and planned to the last detail. I can tell you from experience they are not! Let's shoot this real quick! Let's get a shot from this angle. Hurry we're against the deadline. He's a big one, "we've got to shoot your entire trick in 17.5 seconds". The factor of "time" is of the utmost importance when it comes to television.

I think it is wrong to judge Jon Armstrong based on his TV appearance. It is better to judge him on FISM appearance.

Having talked with Jon, there's a reason for the "lacklusterness" of his performance. Even he is disappointed with the final cut.
I have no ill feelings toward any of the performers, or their usual acts; just the way the show made (some) of them appear.

Yes. SOME magic on TV is far, far better than NO magic . . .
