Marshall,
With all the racial ignorance we still endure in this so called civilized modern world of ours I can just imagine what your father endured as a soldier in the US army during WWII. Yet another testiment to his inner strength. Best, Tim |

My Dad wrote books about railroad history, and the last one he wrote before he died was about the role of the railroads in WWII. I helped him with the research, and we found some poignant photos of Japanese-Americans being loaded onto trains to be taken to internment camps. Even though he had lived through those times, Dad was ignorant of what had been done to Japanese-Americans at that time, and was really changed by what he learned in putting together this book.
Just as we must always remember the Holocaust, we can never forget what we did to our own citizens in WWII. We must be vigilant to ensure that something like that never happens again.

There's a couple of stories about Dad being put into jail
because the authorities thought he was a Japanese spy. people were paranoid about the Japanese... Thank goodness for Blackstone, Sr. Or else who would have known what would of happened. nothing like a bit of star power ...

Although I empathise with the internees' plight, I would note that -- though the internment was later ruled un-Constitutional -- there was at least a glimmer of nobility underlying Roosevelt's enactment of Executive Order 9066.
As others have noted, anti-Asian sentiments at that time were intense, and internment was in some small part motivated by a desire (misguided, racist, and paternalistic though it was) to protect Japanese-Americans from mob violence. And while no German- or Italian-Americans were herded into internment camps here on native soil, the Japanese-American camps here significantly differed from their distant Axis cousins, in that the purpose here was internment -- not extermination. Lastly, the death camps of our former enemies were preserved against their wishes, while we ourselves memorialised our shame, preserving the camps we built as a reminder of what should never be again. |

Ah, Keokuk. That explains a lot.

Blackstone Sr. told them her father was actually a Scottish magician from New York named William Robinson. And thus the legend began.
