Hey all,
As you all know, I have been practicing the overhand shuff. Well, I went ahead and bought Paul Wilson's Royal Road DVD. I was just wondering what some of you think of this DVD if any of you have it. I think learning visually will help me much more, and with text to add to it, I think my learning should speed up a bit. I also went ahead and bought the B-2 Bomber pen and the self tying shoelace. I figured, I might need some time away from cards once in awhile and these would be a good switch up. I bought this all from penguinmagic.com so I also get a svengeli(sp?) deck along with a peek wallet. What are these items as there are new terms to me. Thanks all! Appreciate all the help you guys have given me! Patrick |

Paul is a good magician and card man, and did a good job with the RRTCM video. Use the book in conjunction with it. It will help you more.

I've had the royal road book for a couple of years and got the DVD a couple of months ago. I found it to generally be very good. For me it brought the lessons in the book very much to life. I've not seen anything by Paul before and like his contemplative and gentlemanly persona, which is in some ways similar to the character I adopt when performing. If I'm being honest, which I believe I should, I found some of the performances lacking. This, however, is no disrespect to Paul who is a far better magician than I will ever be. I think probably some of the 'audience' used in the tricks weren't the best. Also because there are five DVD's worth of performance I suspect after a while they became a bit 'desensatized' to the magic.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is starting out with card magic who who wants to revisit the Royal Road. |

Enjoy your DVD and learn it as Paul suggested - from disc 1 to 5. In the DVD, Paul also has some updated info that the Royal Road to Card Magic book doesn't.
Hundreds of effects become instantly possible with the Svengail Deck. There's a booklet you can purchase that you can learn how to use this. But I think PeguinMagic also includes some gaffed cards for you to get extra mileage out of the Svengail Deck. I don't have this particular Peek Wallet, but if you read the instruction that comes with the wallet, I'm sure you'll be ready to amaze your spec with your mind reading ability. Enjoy and have fun with your purchase and bonus items.

I got the dvd set recently and I love it.
Really helps you learn the stuff out of the book. Having something in writing and having somebody show you how to do something are two very, very different things. |

I also just bought this DVD and I can only say good things about it. I immediately learned something I missed in the book just by watching it performed. If you are learning RRTCM get the DVD's too.

Because of its building-block style of teaching sleights followed by tricks that utilize those sleights to reinforce the lesson, Paul Wilson stresses the importance of learning from disc 1 to 5 in sequence to get the most out of the DVDs.

Agreed. When learning cards, I liked how this video allowed me to chose a specific move or sleight with the menu. Even the basics of an overhand shuffle is categorized so I can select, freeze and repeat.
I found the set to be excellent. Mike |

You guys are convincing me to pick up the DVD's with all of your great comments. I'm attending Magifest in a few weeks and I'll have to see if someone has it for sale there. Thanks a lot for pushing me spend more money than I need to! My wife may not like this!

LOL...My wife is the same way. But back to the topic. I just got R.G.'s C. C. volumes 1 and 2 and I find some of the tutorials a little hard to understand(probably because I am 6 months new to card magic). It's kinda tuff holding a deck of cards and reading at the same time,as I am not sure how the move is supposed to look. I am seriously concidering the RRTCM DVD series to start with and then goimg back to RGCC after a bit of learning time from the RRTCM. Does this make any sense.
"Hey... How'd you do that?".

I love this DVD to compliment the book. It has really helped me understand how many of the tricks and sleights in the book look when performed properly. My magic has really improved from this combo.
One thing to note if anyone is thinking of picking up the DVD make sure you get the one by R. Paul Wilson published by L&L. There are a couple of other Royal Road DVD's available but I don't think any of them are as good as the Paul Wilson set. |

I have both the book and the DVD (actually two different RRTCM DVDs by two different folks). I learn better watching this stuff than reading about it. Especially the more visual tricks / moves, etc. In short the DVD is a good boost to the book for me, but I wouldn't skip the book for just the DVD.
My only complaint is the poor lighting, but I've mentioned that before. |

OK, this is slightly off topic of the DVD's but not RRTCM. Has anyone listened to the GoMagicGo Podcast Beginner Lessons on RRTCM? I just found them and thought I would start listening to them as well. Just wanted to get some thoughts on them.

I listened to the first couple podcasts on the RRTCM and its more of hints to add to the book. I tried the first couple and I personally didn't find them useful. The book was enough. I don't know if they had videos with the podcast but it was all audio for me. I'm not familiar with podcast that is why.
Its been a month and I still haven't recieved my DVD. Penguin magic screwed up my order and sent the book instead of the DVD and they said the DVD would be sent but it still has not arrived. I'm growing a little impatient. Meanwhile, I been reading the complete course in magic which is a great beginner book. I have gotten down the self working tricks so far and the hindu shuffle. Its a good start! |

I picked up the DVD and I love it but I didn't get the book and now plan to pick it up as my study guide and quick reference. I'm like a kid on Christmas morning so even though Paul suggested studying in order, I jumped ahead just long enough to see the wisdom of his words!
