I asked the very same question when I was starting off, and the best advice I got was to avoid the commercial sites such as Penguinmagic or Ellusionist. If money's tight, pick up a book. Not a book on just effects, but ones covering fundamentals too.
One that will come up all the time will be "Royal Road to Card Magic," but I personally perfer (probably because I had it before Royal Road) "Expert Card Techniques" by Braue and Hugard. Don't put down the book just because it was released in the 30's. It's an invaluable source of practically everything you need. Even the basic mentalism and propmaking stuff are in there. |

Go to your local libraries and look for books on magic.
Cards and coins are a good place to start. The "Royal Road to Card Magic" and "Modern Coin Magic" books are inexpensive and should keep you busy. |

Yo:
When I first started I did the following... #1- Went to or called all the used bood stores in my area asking if they had any magic books and if they would add me to a list to call if they got any in. #2- I literally checked out every magic book in both the adult and childrens section of my local library (Westminster, Orange County, CA) and read them. In the 1966 time frame the library had about 30 books on magic many of them were classics. Read anything you can find for free, etc. I can tell you this: Magic knowledge is cumulative and EVERYTHING is of value no matter how trivial it may seem. That means that even the most 'childish' of magic books will freqently have some small bit of business or underlying principle that is of value. Hope that helps! All best,
Brad Burt

I just picked up a cheesy looking book called "Mystifying Card Tricks" from Barnes and Nobels, and it's already helped me more than anything by ellusionist.
