This is a theoretical question... I know the "needle through arm" effect, and I have used it... and in these days with many people having piercings, well... I forgot about it.
Then Derren started to play with needles on TV... and, though I don't intend to actually pierce my specs, I wonder if it could be done live in a parlour setting (I don't do stage)... The piercing is no problem... But the clean-up would be... or not... What do you think ? |

I perform a similar effect on special occasions (parlour and even close up).
It is part of a longer routine with needles. I will not give away my method (it is entirely different than Derren’s both methods). But to answer your question: Yes, it can be done live in a parlour setting (without stooges of course). |

That's one of the things that Traveler is talking about, if anyone didn't know. |

I shy away from anything like that. Needles and spectators do not mix in my book. With the spread of HIV and other diseases, even if you take every precaution, there is a fear in the minds of the spectator, and what if the person was ill and did not know it. He finds out later, who do you think is going to get the blame? Not worth the risk.
This goes for the real piercing of the hand with a needle, and might be considered for the gaffed needle thru arm effect. Doing it to you is a different matter. Tony |

In my day we simply stuck those long needles in Balloons and they did not pop.

Hello Tony,
you are right. I presume you know Derren Brown’s two routines? One of his methods is risky the other one is 100% safe. However the safe method is not usable in a live performance. The method I use is 100% safe and harmless. Let me say so much: My business is to create perfect illusions to entertain people. I don’t want to torture them. I do this kind of performances only on special occasions when I personally know the spectators and when the mood is right. No matter how safe my method is, I do not want to be sued by my spectators (or should I say victims? ). |

Oh, yes... the HIV issue... You're right about that, of course...
Anyway, I was only wondering about the "safe" version... which appears to be unperformable live... The "unsafe" version had never crossed my mind in contemplating this... As for doing it on yourself... no prob, but I think it's less impressive these days, where piercings abound and people fly suspended by helicopters, only hung by piercings... |
