Hi !
I'm new to the Café, I thing it's a great place and wonderful initiative. However, I don't find it very easy to use, as there are so many rooms and sub-forums and all... My questions are : - When you posted a message on a topic (not a new topic), how do you practically follow the discussion ? Do you just bookmark the URL and check frequently ? Isn't there a way to be aware that someone posted a reply and a new message ? - I thought I saw some icons (like coffee cups) tutorial : I believe these icons indicated when there's a new message in a room : Can I have more infos ? - How do you discover new topics (that you might answer to) ? Do you just browse all the rooms, and all categories... frequently? Is there a RSS feed on the Café or a summary of recent posts? [How did you find out about this new topic I just created?] Thank you for your answers. Maybe there is a tutorial somewhere, sorry if I missed it. Happy 2007 ! Kohai |

Kohai, when you log in to the Café, you'll see red and white coffed mugs next to each topic. The red ones mean there are new messages in that forum since you last logged in. Depending on your computer system and settings, these do no always work, however if you look at the right hand column titled "Last Active" you see the date and member ID of the last person to post in teh topic. You can tell from that if the message is new or not if you remember when you last visited.
This is explained in the Café rules and etiquette forum. As a new user, you should take some time and read those. Also, in the upper right corner of every page is a tab FAQ. Both of these forums should answers most of your questions. There currently is no bookmark function within the Café.

Yes, the best way to keep up on the topics is to just browse all the rooms. Since I am online quite often I found this topic because the text was yellow, meaning something changed since my last visit. Orange text indicates to me that I visited recently and there has been no changes since then. |

As a new arrival I have a question which is even more that of a neophyte: how do you start a new topic with a new post? So far I can only see a method for posting replies. I wanted to query folks about the Vanishing & Appearing Coke Bottle and how it compares with Nielsen bottles. How can I start a new topic within the appropriate forum?
Thanks! |

There are red "glowing" letters at the left of the top bar in each forum that say "Post New Topic." I have to agree that they don't stand out very well though.

First, let me suggest you use our search function found in the upper right corner of each page. I believe you question has already been discussed several times. In any event, to start a new topic, simply go to the forum you want to post in and click on the forum name. For instance this was posted in the tech forum so you should have clicked on the Forum name "The Magic Café Tech Help Area". When that opens, look on the left side of the screen near the top under the logo and you'll see a Red banner that says "post a new topic". Click on that and type your message with a title. That's all there is too it.
