This is one of the most often misinterpreted sets of last words in the world. Goethe spoke the German dialect of Frankfurt. The correct translation of his last words is "Light. Give me light."

That's actually an urban legend, based on the fact that in a 1925 Vanity Fair interview, he proposed that his tombstone should read "Here lies W. C. Fields. I would rather be living in Philadelphia." The phrase mutated from there to the form we know today (his actual tombstone just says "W.C. Fields 1880-1946"). His actual last words, as I understand, were these:

"God d*** this whole ****ing world and everyone in it but you, Carlotta."

Carlotta was his mistress, who apparently was at his bedside as he died. I love W.C. Fields....
