"All things considered, I'de rather be in Philadelphia" is on William Claud Dukenfield's (W.C. Fields) grave stone.

Goethe, German Poet This is one of the most often misinterpreted sets of last words in the world. Goethe spoke the German dialect of Frankfurt. The correct translation of his last words is "Light. Give me light."

Al Angello;
Didn't you mean, Bill Palmer is the absolute king of usefull information?
Our friends don't have to agree with me about everything and some that I hold very dear don't have to agree about anything, except where we are going to meet them for dinner.

Well I really meant to say Bill is the best source for both useful, and useless information.

On 2007-01-17 09:29, Al Angello wrote: That's actually an urban legend, based on the fact that in a 1925 Vanity Fair interview, he proposed that his tombstone should read "Here lies W. C. Fields. I would rather be living in Philadelphia." The phrase mutated from there to the form we know today (his actual tombstone just says "W.C. Fields 1880-1946"). His actual last words, as I understand, were these: "God d*** this whole ****ing world and everyone in it but you, Carlotta." Carlotta was his mistress, who apparently was at his bedside as he died. I love W.C. Fields.... A few other good last words: "How were the receipts today at Madison Square Garden?" - P.T. Barnum "I am dying. Please... bring me a toothpick." - Alfred Jarry, absurdist playwright "Is everyone else alright?" - Robert Kennedy "Don't let me die, I've got so much to do." - Huey Long "Die, my dear? Why that's the last thing I'll do!" - Groucho Marx "Drink to me!" - Pablo Picasso "I just had eighteen straight scotches. I think that's the record...After thirty-nine years, this is all I've done." - Dylan Thomas "Don't let it end like this. Tell them I said something." - Pancho Villa

I, too, used to "collect" gravestone epitaphs. My personal favorite, which still touches my heart is:
We loved this tender little one and would have wished her stay But let our Father's will be done She shines in endless day Clara Macy Peas, 8 years old. Can't remember when she died, but it was in a cemetary from the 1800's.

All though not famous, rich or powerful, my dad's last words were: I'm tired, I'm ready to go home now. Then he kissed my mother good night, told her he loved her and drifted off to sleep.
