Hey guys, I'm a novice college magician who is looking for an effective, visual coin trick for bar performances and such. I've done some research on both the S&S and Copper, Silver, Brass and have heard good reviews from both. They ultilize the same principle from what I gather. From Doc Eason's bar magic dvd, I saw variations for the C/S/B routine which looks good but S&S IS the best selling coin trick of all time. I'm contemplating, any good people here have any suggestions to point me the right direction?
btw. if I'm not mistaken, the C/S/B can achieve the same effect as S&S, right? Just a slight variation in handling...? Cheers, milez |

If your doing restaurant magic and don't want to always worry about the reset, the scotch and soda isn't probably the way you want to go. But I have both effects and like them both.

Both gimmicks play well and are versatile.
As tbear points out, S&S has a reset you have to do in private. If you are doing walk-around and will have to reset and repeat quickly this would be a problem, but if you are performing socially for people who you will be with for a while, you won't need to reset, and the S&S is very clean. C/S/B is more versatile, if you search the Café forums there are lots of threads with lots of ideas for different presentations, and reset doesn't require a trip to a bathroom stall, but there are more parts to keep track of. If you decide on S&S, I would advise getting it in Half Dollar size rather than "Small Dollar" (Sacajawea or Susan B) because the small coin is easy to mistake for a quarter, particularly in "bar light". Avoid the sasco version, it's assembled with glue and falls apart.
Woke up.

I love s/s! I usually have the coin reapear in a pack of cards, which is a great lead in to card tricks. it does take some reset, but with busy places like bars and such it's not that hard to quickly do it.

Coin Unique is an s/s set that resets quickly and easily, no bang for your buck required.

Another consideration might be that Scotch & Soda is a more common effect and is known to more "laymen" than CSB.

In the 80s I was doing Scotch and Soda at a corporate event. One of the guests took me aside and wanted to buy some for his uses. He had given his away. Known for carrying spares and hating the bang ring for walk-around, I sold him 12 of the 16 sets I had with me. Then stung him with the Sun and Moon (Hopping Half)!
Like the paper balls over the head, Scotch and Soda plays well even for audiences that have seen it over and over. It becomes a spectator sport! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Mixed in with other coin routines, S&S is always fresh. This is especially true when the copper coin shows up in an unexpected location.

Just out of curiosity, doesn't anyone own the magnetic S&S set? I used to use it the restaurant a lot, with no reset issues at all. Way easier than a bang ring and more versatile.
Just a thought...

Well ive had 3 S/S and with time they all changed on me, as far as sticking or hard time getting you know what, clicking noise during inspection(THANKS GOD THEY WERE DRUNK)and I have even lost the o-, if you catch my drift. I love C/S/B but then again in this effect, its not so easy as S/S to perform, especially those like Cody Fisher, Dan Watkins and Doc Eason. S/S was a great effect when I first started, but with the years I found that I kinda like the more advanced ones. but then again that might change if I ever found a good one that wouldnt do me dirty. Actually last week I found my Gold Dollar Gimmick, but no you know what to get it to work. So my suggestion would be to work on both, sooner or later you will end up getting the C/S/B/ set anyway, that is of course if you stick to coin magic.

I have a M S&S set I bought from Precision Magic in 2001 and it like no other. They don’t sell them anymore. I have used it hundreds of times and it is in perfect condition. Another cool thing is you don’t need a b-ring for it you just need anything metal. I just use my card clip.

Daytona has a plated cut down gimmick for the English penny SS set so that you actualy have a reason to do the effect, which is to change the other coin so the are both silver.

I love both...but I use S&S more than my CSB. Just fits me better..but everyone is different.

TRY IT. The reset may be too much for strolling work.
...to all the coins I've dropped here

I have been playing with it and the reset is tough. Bathroom breaks always give me the minute or two to reset and continue.
Just wondering if there was anything published. I have been using John Bannons Handling and trying to incorporate SS somewhere in there. I'll post a seperate topic once I am closer. Will//
