My solution to this problem has first been to stay single so there is no answering to the most feminine gender.
The second has been to only purchase books/props/information that I intend to use for a specific purpose, with the main focus on books/information. Working close up and on the street the only props I have purchased are C&B's, sponge balls, a wand, rope, some I.E.T. & cards. Everything else I make myself which costs less and ends up the way I want it. |

Perceived value is always a subjective thing, and as magicians we have a view point that not all spouses and lay people understand unless it’s explained to them. Say I was to buy a pear of coins from schoolcraft at $85.00, firstly they wouldn’t know that it was say a flipper and at all tense and purposes it would appear to the uneducated that we payed a lot of money to what simply equates to a half dollar that they would get in change every day at the local supermarket.
However sit them down and show them that this is not any average coin and that this fact alone requires a skilled individual to manufacture this gimmick then maybe the intrinsic value of the item may start to reveal itself. Justifying your purchase in terms of research and time as some of the details outlined in my Buying Magic (How-To Guide) might give weight to the fact that this was a considered purchase and not an impulse buy. Of course I would only do these things for the person who you need to justify it to, a wife, husband, or girlfriend who you have co-ownership of the purse strings with. Other wise everyone else can ether like it or lump it as far as I’m concerned. Of course your always going to have a person that no matter what you do, will see it as a wast of money, but I would simply remark to that person, “What price do you place on things that you enjoy doing?” Above all Honesty is key. I keep a firm line between "magic money" (that which I currently make trickle busking) and "money" which I earn at my day job. "magic money" can be spent on anything I want, including gaffs, books, dvd, cards, etc. "money" is a shared resource which my wife and I decide how to use and where and when. So, in effect, the magic pays for itself. Naturally, a few books came first, but gaffs have always been paid for by magic.
Now I'm in the process of converting magic in my life from a hobby that pays for itself into a career that pays for life and livelilhood. It's a 5 year plan. So far, things are on schedule. |
