I’ve been messing with a presentation where the card selected represents the spectator. As they go through their life, there are ups & downs, twists & turns. They feel overwhelmed & lost in the crowd.
In the end, if they truly believe in themselves..... etc. everything works itself out & they "triumph" over everything. What do you think? |

Personally, I am frightened. Triumph was running through my head last night. Eerie conection. Great effect, can’t it be more than a stunt. Granted a few stunt presentations could be interspersed amid story presentations to add texture, but Triumph can be rather drawn out which would lend itself to a nice story. Hmmm... If I eject myself from the word triumph... Yes, soulmate, a very magical thing. "Lets take a ride on the Soooouuuullllmate Train." To elaborate on Ichazod’s idea. "A chance meeting... or was it." Selected card to be the soulmate. "Life’s events tumble and toss, jumble and boss... you around. At times you feel lost in the crowd not knowing which direction to turn." "And then they are there, and that makes your whole world right." Thanks for giving the push Ichazod. Tom Cutts |

Too mushy, OK.
How about this? Selected card is driver. "Out one morning for a pleasant drive (spectator’s name) is enjoying the warm day and the beauty of the trees that pass by, the sun on your face, the wind gently brushing your hair, and a pleasant tune on the radio." "Almost too late (spectator’s name) notices a cat dart out from between parked cars. Swerving to miss the cat in the road, (spectator’s name) loses control of the car." "The faint sound of screeching tires plays in the background as the car hits the guard rail tossing it, and its contents, about. Tumble after tumble, flip after flip, (spectator’s name) is lost in the whirl of crushing steel, breaking glass, and bucket seats." "In an instant the car jerks to a stop... and (spectator’s name) realizes it was a momentary halucination." "The car is fine, the cat is fine, and the day is fine indeed." Tom Cutts |

Or… Done with Tarot cards. Leave the devil card on the side… Mix the rest of the cards, now enter into your life, doubt, apathy, despair, in short… The devil.
Suddenly your life is out of your control, everything’s mixed up, confusing… just when you think you cannot go on… (the cards are spread, and shown to have righted themselves, except for one.) There is a light at the end of the dark tunnel. (Turn the card over to reveal...) I don’t know, the Lovers, The Sun, maybe the Star. Or, maybe you. One of those and the chaos of life is only righted with one thing… Death. Sorry, written by a tried man with check |

Good job with the tarot twist too. Tom |

Guys,
I have no problem with the use of story patter-- I use it quite a bit myself-- but isn’t the point to give the audience a reason to care about the effect, rather than a story for the sake of its cleverness. Discussing The trials and tribulations of life in broad terms is fine but to make it meaningful don’t we need to discuss real ups and real downs, real tosses and real turns the audience can relate to their own experience? They can be treated in a humorous way or more seriously but don’t they have to be somwhat more specific? Just a question but it reflects my experience that the best stories have an objective correlative to life situations _________________ Wesley James |

True, true Wesley,
I purposefully leave just the last degree of specifics out. One, such specifics only relate to me and my presentation. For others to use my exact wording and exacting detail would be foolish. I 'tale' of things I experience or can vividly imagine. Secondly, it is for each to fill in the details that make a story believable, emotional, and theirs. I know these two concepts are related but they are very important sides of the same coin. Also note some of this is just brainstorming and as such may not even be intended as a final destination worthy of in depth embelishment. Tom Cutts |

I thought we were just talkin’ about patter ideas, not the finished script.

This is a place for ideas, Wesley made a good point about specifics. I’m sure we will all tailor the ideas we get here to our own needs & performing styles.
So far, this is great! Thanx to all who are contributing here. Those who are lurking about, need to throw some of their ideas in here. |

When I was young, I wanted to be unique, but everything I tried, I always found that about half the people I knew were doing it too. (shuffle fu/fd)
Except for the truly insane, which, in spite of what we said every day, we did not REALLY want to be. (show face to face, back to back, etc...) To be truly unique takes a lot of thought, planning, and... Style (spread, showing one reversed card)

Making Patter is hard, once you have got the mechanics right it is really hard to dress a trick up with patter and make it convincing. Any ideas?

I thought this was a good thread to get started again since we have a lot more members than we did when I started it.
Any ideas??? :bat: How about this- You do your Triumph & you put a rubberband around the deck & place it in the spectators hand. You talk about how the cards are all messed up & since there is a rubberband around them, you can't do anything about it. Much like a parent knows that their childs room is messy & they want to clean it, they can't because the door is locked. They imagine how they would go in there & straighten it up. Ask the spectator to imagine themselves straightening out all the cards except for the one they chose, once they have done that, ask them to remove the band & look at the cards. I'm not sure if you guys know this or not but in Ninja 2 video by ellusionist there is already a trick named Triumph.

Nappa,
Triumph is a trick that is quite old, invented by Dai Vernon (The Professor). Ellusionist has THEIR version of it on their video, but it is not their creation (in fact, I don't believe anything on ellusionist is actually theirs!) We are discussing presentational ideas to use during the effect Triumph.
Pick a card, any card...
