Hi everyone...after purchasing John Borns book I thought I would memorize a stack. I have always stayed away from them but what the heck...as most humans I wanted something easy. I have the aronson and Tamariz books but I heard the joyal 6 hr stack was easy to learn so I picked it up. easy stack to remember. my question is, how hard is it to do some of the aronson or Tamariz mem deck effects with the joyal stack? before I get this stack down I would like opinions as to..am I wasting my time with joyal and should I move to something else. I don't really have any other effects in mind, other than ACAAN but but I would like the mem deck to be useful for other things. if I could get a few good effects from one mem deck, then I would be ok with it. there just aren't many effect in the 6 hr mem deck book. I am hoping there are other effects out there that use the joyal mem deck. you input would be appeciated.
all these different stacks...its driving me crazy!!!! |

I'm sure everyone will want to weigh-in and tout their favorite stack. Thankfully, though, 99% of the best things one can do with a stack is completely independant of which stack one uses. You can pick up Mneumonica (and absolutely should!) and you would still get a thousand-fold return on your investment as most are not Mneumonica-specific. Likewise with the Aronson books. I don't use his stack, but some effects from Simply Simon and Try the Impossible have become staples in my performance. Likewise, I use some of the work from Joyal's book. Joyal was my first stack, and even though I moved to Mneumonica (simply because most of the magicians I know use Mneumonica so it allows for some good tag-team work) I still think it's a great stack. Very easy to learn-- it really is six or less hours of work. I will tell you this to put your mid at ease if you're set on Joyal: I know full-time professional magicians with great reputations who employ the Joyal stack. So, it's definitely not just for beginners. Also, good call on John Born's book "Meant to Be..." Ever single time I go through the book I uncover more principles and subtleties secreted away in there.

A good effect you can easily adapt to a memdeck is the Trick That Can't Be Explained. Normally you have to see the first 5 cards that are laid down and then memorize them. With a memdeck, you don't have to see any of them... only the bottom card from the portion of the deck the specs aren't using. Taht makes an unexplainable effect well... even more inexplicable.
I like to adapt known effects with a memdeck twist to see if they can be improved that way. This is one that improves a whole lot. |

I've been using the Joyal stack since it first came out. It did take me more than six hours to learn it. However, it's relatively easy. I would recommend the portion of the book using reverse CHaSeD order. I think fewer folks will be using that simply because it appears second in the book. I've fooled other folks who know the stack by starting somewhere other than at he first card in the stack. The book contains a nice discussion about stacks vs. memorized decks - there is a difference. I found Mneumonica difficult to read.

I always liked that order better than CHSD since I naturally think Spades = 1 (1 point), Hearts = 2 (2 lobes), Clubs = 3 (3 leaves), Diamonds = 4 (4 sides). DSHC, while the same cyclically, would instead be 4, 1, 2, 3. Just curious. Plus "SHoCkeD" seems more magical than "CHaSeD" |

All the best mem-deck effects seem to be stack-independent (i.e work with any memorised stack).
I chose to learn the Joyal stack because it seemed the least intimidating. I think it was a fantastic investment of my time - and much easier than I expected. NB - You haven't truly "learnt" a stack until it is instant and automatic. I reckon it takes about 3 months practice to get to that stage. (Much easier than many sleights). I find a mem-deck can help in all sorts of unexpected ways. Many "standard" effects can be made easier or more powerful by adding that tool. |
