I think we owe him alot. He's revitalized the interest in close up magic for many non-magicians.
BTW Did anyone catch the parody of Blaine? It's Hilarious!!!!!! http://themagiccafe.com/forums/viewtopic......forum=32 |

FWIW, I'm not sure that he really cares WHAT we think of him... Old story: Liberace was panned by critics for his then-new TV show in the 1950s. He was asked if he was offended; he replied, "Oh yes. My brother George and I cried all the way to the bank." Between his shows, his book, his contracts...I'd be willing to guess that David doesn't have much trouble sleeping at night, even knowing there are some magicians who don't like his positioning himself in the realm of street magic.

Like him or not, He can only make YOU look better. I feel average people judge us against "real TV magicians". How many times have you been compared to Copperfield or Burton? or had someone mention something one of them did on TV while you are waiting for them to pick their card? Blaine came along and in his first special - made us ALL - "TV QUALITY MAGICIANS". He took basic props that most of us own (basic magic shop stuff) and put it on TV.
Now, when you bite a quarter and restore it or make a card change in the spectators hand, YOU are as good as that guy on TV in their eyes. As far as his dry, spooky attitude, I add a flashy, outgoing, fun, funny, likeable personality to the performance of the same effect and now I AM BETTER than him to my audience. Personally, I like him. -->My Opinion. Thank you for your time

Here wo go, when I first saw DB on Oprah a while before the Street Magic special I thought, gee, here is a guy doing an ambitious routine then an Invisable deck, and a few other easy tricks...that I have been doing for many years. How did he get the attention of Oprah? Three words, Leonardo De Caprio. Goes to prove the old addage it is WHO not WHAT you know. Any way I am probably 10 times more happy being the "only slightly famous magician from a little town in Maryland" Final thought on DB-----
1) magician--mediocre 2) self promoter -- Great 3) position in life not knowing Leo-- just like the rest of us jeff |

Blaine has much in common with Bob Dylan, if you look at his performance style philosophically. Perpetually misunderstood, brilliant in concept, and not for everyone. 'Nuff said.

It is an irrefutable fact; he just doesn’t do that type of magic. He does not draw a crowd, he does not do a show, and he does not pass the hat. This is what a street magician does. David Blaine has never referred to himself as a “street magician”. He did a special called “Street Magic” where he did walk around magic for people on the street. That was an appropriate title, it is what he was doing. He didn’t call himself a street magician. This post was originally started in the street magic section. That is where a lot of professional street magicians discuss working the streets. It has nothing to do with David Blaine. I wish Blaine nothing but the best, I hope he makes 50 mil. for his next special. If he were ever to start doing street magic street magicians would welcome him with open arms. But the fact remains; he does not do street magic. It would be like calling Chris Angel a kids show magician. It makes no sense. That is the only problem anyone has with posting about him in the Sidewalk Shuffle. It is not the appropriate place for the thread. It has now been moved to a much more appropriate place and there is no longer a problem. Does that make my position any clearer? Best, Dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board!
