I was fortunate enough to recently acquire a set of all-gold plated Sherwood Silver Engraved cups. They are magnificent.
I studied the FAQ on Brett's website and emailed him a couple of questions, re: caring for the gold plating. I wanted to also ask here to get some other thoughts. Specifically with regard to the effect on the gold plating: Doing the cup through cup sequence. I treat the cups about as lightly as I can while still being able to make something of the move. Polishing - what to use? There is some tarnishing on the interior of one of the shoulder beads. I was curious to see if the the gold plate would tarnish (or is it the silver tarnishing through the gold plate?). Guess I have my answer! Also, when held at the right angle, some areas of the cups just barely reflect in different colors, much like an oil slick - don't know why it does, but it really is interesting. Perhaps going over it with a cloth would take care of that, but I am not sure I want to take care if it - it's kind if neat! Anyway, your thoughts would be appreciated. Mark

If you have problems keeping them shiny, just send them to me. I'll take good care of them for you.

I knew Dave was a nice guy.
Mark, Did you get these cups where I think you got these cups?

Already done....when I hear back, I'll let you all know. I know Brett's site says not to use polish that you use on the silver on the gold areas, and that his plating is very durable as far as gold plating goes. Not being experienced in that area, I am not sure exactly what to expect. Not too worried - I have a feeling they'll look great no matter what.
It will all work out in the wash.

If there is a good plating company near you, they could probably replate them. I know a fellow in Nashville who specializes in this, as well.

Frank, so THAT'S where those weird colors came from!!!
Thanks, guys. I heard from Brett about the cup-through-cup move, and his answer was about as I expected. It is not a move that should give me much, if any, pause to do. Just don't clank them hard - for the sake of not risking denting the silver as much as the plate. All the reports he has had say that the plating holds up very well. The different color reflections I mentioned above are probably just hand oils - I have not wiped the cups down yet. I noticed the tarnishing after I sent my email to Brett. Hope to have some news soon on what to use. I mentioned to Brett I will collect all info I can on polishing but not do anything for awhile to see how the cups look over time, and then decide about cleaning/polishing, as I might like them better with nature taking its course (up to a point, anyway).

Chessmann,
Do not polish the Gold Plated parts of the Cups. Gold does not tarnish! Gold is a very soft metal (Brett uses 24k gold plate). I speak with the voice of experience about these Cups. Handle them, and Love them, they will respond in like manner. Best Regards, Bill Sutter |
