But you also have to remember we over analyze the illusions that we forget we are also entertaining a lay audience not a audience filled with magicians. But in another sense you also have to keep in mind that things have to have a reason why they are happening on stage. Not like oh here is a sword and look what I can do with it. Must have that presentation that Jack is talking about and it will sell.

Since they don't know the girl is not in the box when the swords are inserted, there is tension and drama during that time.
Granted, the disappearance of the girl explains why she wasn't impaled by the swords, but not every effect has to remain magical. The audience experiences both an "Aha!" and a "Wow!" The surprise created by the girl disappearing intensifies the emotional experience. There is no surprise to just open the box and find the girl intact. The audience expects that is how the routine will end. Similarly, there is little drama to have the girl enter the box and just disappear for no particular reason. It's surprising, but there is no emotional investment. Payne also gave a good explanation. It's the story that's being told, it's not just about the magic. I do understand what you mean about the first effect being ruined. How about this? You open up the box and a different girl comes out, the evil girl that wanted the first girl tortured. Or, you could do a presentation where the hooded torturer who is inserting the swords ends up in the box and when the hooded figure removes the hood, it's the girl. Replacing a disappearance with a transposition would require a different presentation, and perhaps a different apparatus too, depending on how you are doing this now. Oh, beware of taking advice from me, I'm an amateur close-up and stage guy with no grand illusion experience at all, except that I am an expert grand illusion audience member! By the way, I like the presentation with the disappearance more, but I'm not sure exactly why! I have to think about that. It might be what Payne wrote that makes me feel that way.
Humans make life so interesting. Do you know that in a universe so full of wonders, they have managed to create boredom. Quite astonishing.

What about the props that have the hand of the assistant visible throughout the portion of when the spikes or whatever are being plunged into the box. They let the audience know that he or she is still in that space. Then the magician makes the hand vanish before showing that the assistant has vanished also. It gives the double Wow factor.
But I agree, I've seen too many performances or magicians just DOING the trick and running through the motions and not giving any thought to why or telling any story. Matt |

I also accept Bill Hallahan's point that "It's the story that's being told, it's not just about the magic." and that " when the swords are inserted, there is tension and drama during that time." I think these points are good answers to the question I posed in the opening post of this thread, It's been interesting. Thanks guys, Neal
