What's up Café?
I heard that there was a liquid chemical that you can apply to a metal object (like a ring), and the object instantly heats to a considerably hot temperature. Does anyone know what this chemical is and where I can find more info on it? Thanks A N T I N O + President of the House of Flying Cards magician troupe + + http://www.freewebs.com/hofc |

Branded name "Hypno-heat". Viking sells a version. Highly toxic if not handled properly. Viking did not have proper warnings. Can not expose names here. VERY DANGEROUS to your liver!
Many stories of spectators acting macho, not letting it go and getting burned. Why do that to your guests? |

If this is the same chemical I had read about some years back (and judging by the effect's name, I think it is) mghia's warning should not be taken lightly. This is a mercuric compound which is lethal. This does not simply mean if you are careless enough to ingest it, but even by absorption through the skin. So my recommendation would be to forget about rubbing it on your finger to put it onto the object or silver paper, as that is exposing yourself to serious toxic problems. I had stopped doing it when I read this, not only for myself but would not dream of using it on a spectator, knowing how dangerous it is.
Apparently this same chemical is used in an old novelty called Pharaoh's Serpents, or similar names; a pellet, which when lit, produces a sort of snake shape. Sadly, this is still sold openly in joke shops. |

Hey all,
I was just in contact with George Robinson of Viking Mfg. Co. Viking produces a product called Hot Ball. Here's what he had to say about Hypno-Heat and Hot Ball. Quote: Regarding Hypno-Heat, I have been using it for over 40 years, but then

This stuff was sold back in the 70's by a popular Magic Manufacture back then.
Some one got poisioned from it and the Manufacture got sued, as a result they went bankrupt. |

Merlins of wakefield stock hypno-heat however beware it is not in liquid form but tiny white sticks which you rub on your finger then use a little moisture from a can etc to activate it. It works well.
