A very pretty effect. Pretty close to self-working so you could focus completely on the presentation. Maybe a story about how when you were a kid, you picked the flowers from your mother's prized rose bush ... and when you saw how upset she was you were thankful you had just read that book on magic ... and you made the plant bloom again just in time for her to win the prize at the county fair.

Good routine, thanks. It does look nice. Wish it was stateside, would make it easier in case repairs/parts are needed.

I have to say that I agree with both of you. I had never seen one like that. Looks much like the rose bush effect from Hughes Magic.
Thanks for pointing it out to us! Brad

I only wish it were remote controlled ... so you could start the blooming process several steps away from it.

I'm sure that there has to be someway to convert it.
I bet one of the clever guys here at the Café could figure out a way! =Frank=

Hi Gang,
Received one yesterday and finally got around to playing with it this AM. Shipping time was about a week or so. Not bad from Bangkok. Pretty well built though not on par with, say, Owens, Collectors Workshop or Wolf. Still, I've paid a lot more for a lot less. It comes with a mid-quality storage case. Some sort of painted pressboard (I think) - not a "hardwood case" as is stated in the instructional video. It won't hold up like an ATA case but I have purchased many props that were just as expensive that came wrapped only in bubble wrap - so the case is a nice plus. The feather flowers are pretty nice quality and, from what I can tell, should hold up well. The devil's hank is a heavy, slick fabric. Not sure if it's silk and doesn't match the pattern in the online demo but it's okay. The fan is the cheapest piece of junk in the outfit. The glue holding the fabric to the plastic ribs is still tacky and makes it hard for the fan to open cleanly. Mechanically, it is very clever and pretty simple in constuction. Parts would not be hard to locate at your local Radio Shack. Don't know enough about wireless to figure out how to retrofit but when you slide the activator switch (located on the TOP of the pot, not in the back) there is NO time delay. The flowers begin to rise immediately. The "drive belt" looks more fragile than a rubber band so I will locate a few extras to keep on hand. One warning - Rutt says on the instructional DVD to make sure the switch is moved to the center position when not in use. What that means is, if it's not in the center position, the motor is in torque mode, (either trying to raise the flowers up or down) even when the prop is just sitting there. This WILL drain your batteries and fast. I know, because I did it already - took about 30 minutes to heat those batteries up and shazam! Flat. The center switch positon kills power to the motor, relieving the torque. This means you will need to fiddle with the switch again during your show (or just replace the batteries every time;o) One last gripe. The DVD did not work on my laptop player - which is brand new. Didn't matter which player I tried - Windows Media, Real, WinDVD. It would begin to play and then skip and finally freeze up. It did, however, play on my portable Toshiba DVD player. Overall, I am pleased. Plus, (maybe because I purchased a second prop) he threw in a free trick - the Crystal Wonder Wand (a $60 value). Again, an unexpected bonus. I'll be buying from Mr. Rutt again. Cheerio, Kerry

Hi there all
Just a few pointers here the DVD in fact is a VCD and will not open automatically .....it does have to be opened on your Media player as Kerry has said and we put in a separate instruction leaflet on how to open it on your PC. The Case it comes in was originally a hardwood one but we found it too heavy for shipping .....my apologies I will alter the description. I do agree It is not on a par with Owens or Chance Wolf's wonderful products but that is because it is only half the price and our policy is to try to make products that are really affordable to the working magician but are of good quality....and I hope we do .Kerry if anything should go wrong let me know as we have spare parts here. Kerry thanks for the review. yours Derek

Hello Mr. Rutt,
Yes, the quality-to-price ratio is very good. I would not have paid much more for this effect regardless of who built it or how much better the quality. The VCD did start to play in my laptop (following your instructions) but then skipped and froze up. It may be the copies you are burning or my player - not sure, but it did work fine on a regular DVD player. Glad you appreciated the review. I did try to be fair and balanced. Whether I was delighted, or disappointed (small issues), I tried to be respectfully honest. Cheerio, Kerry

I second Kerry's review. This trick is a great value and cleverly constructed. There are a few problems: the case is poor quality (mine is already breaking), it makes some noise (like all tricks with electrical components) and the batteries do heat up and drain quickly. But I have opened with this trick to music at a few kid shows already, and it has gotten raves. I start with the magic tea pot, but pluck yellow, red, and blue flowers from the autoflower to insert into the teapot to "turn" the water these three colors. Then I proceed to the autoflower itself, and it's a stunner. I would also add that the fan is plasticy and a little cheap, but the silk Devil's Hank is a high quality item (and I'm looking for another fan). If you want to give your botania a break, this is some beautiful flower magic for you.
I have several of Derek Rutt's items, and find most of them to be top-notch. Monkey Business is a novel sucker trick variation, his spirit cloth is high quality, his Butterfly and Merlin's books draw gasps (the Merlin's book is my magic cookbook for my dove pan sponge cake). And the man's creativity is evident all over his web site (quite an ambitious set of "forthcoming items" well-considered for the under 12 crowd and family comedy magic). If my snake wand hadn't broken almost immediately, I'd give the products of his I know a 10. As it is, they get a solid 9, and auto flower is right at the top (and I'm a tough reviewer who has e-mailed with Mr. Rutt, but never met him). To me, Derek Rutt Creations and Wolf's Magic are the pantheon of quality magic for childrens' performers. |

Please let me know in what way your Wand to snake broke.....so I can correct the fault if there is one as I have never had one break before ! It is important to get the feed back for a manufacturer in order to improve all the time. Many thanks for the nice things you have said about my products !! By the way the case for Autoflower has already been re-designed ....we hope it is better although it is not a flight case only a wood one.Just a note the batteries will heat up and drain quickly if you leave it switched on after you have finished the effect ...always leave the switch in the central position unless it is working. Hope this helps. yours Derek
