Magicman...Some thoughts for you....There is also a holdout put out by Vernet...called the "3rd Hand" A variation of the Miller Holdout...plus a nice booklet on uses...the Mishell book is also the classic.
There also may be information out there on the "Upside Down Topit" which may very well be what Chapelly is talking about..?? Its not really either. Its a pendulum Principle that Danny Korem put out a long time ago...which Cornelius used to Vanish a ball...which Tommy Wonder so beautifully laid out in his "Book of Wonder" ... You have to understand the differences between the Gravity Holdout and the Tension Holdout used by gamblers sitting at a card table. I think Paul Harris put out a Kepplinger Style hold-out without the knee string. There's also hold-outs used by gamblers which are clips hidden either under the short sleeves of a shirt or inside the overlap of the front of the shirt....As performed so expertly by Steve Forte. One definition of a gravity Hold-out: A pull, that you can either get rid of or get ahold of. One Pull that is so often overlooked is in the Blackstone Book of Magic....Located by the inside breast pocket, its attached to a silk with a length of thread...by pulling the silk out of the pocket, the thread drags the pull into the hand. When it vanishes, you can repeat the reproduction and vanish, etc. A kind of forerunner to some dove production techniques. Cheers, Bob Fitch "Making Magicians Magical"

Ed Mishell's book was reasonably up to date when it was written, but many things have been developed or invented since Ed's passing. It was written in 1969. That's almost 40 years ago. That's pre-Fitch/Kohler, and pre- a lot of other important things. PLUS it did not have all the work on the Jack Miller holdout.

Anyone ever see the Porter Hold-Out? He showed it to me at a convention. It was light, easy to install and eliminated many of the concerns with the rest. He said it was similar to the Fitch-Kohler version which I haven't seen.

In my opinion, one should check Michael Ammar's hold out. I believe the plans of it can be purchased for a few dollars and it is easy to construct.

I found some good routines in there, but not much on the actual construction of a working gravity hold-out. Found Tommy Wonder much more informative on that. Where should I look to find the more recent developments, and the full work on the Jack Miller hold-out? Also, I couldn't find any more mention of a Porter hold-out. Was it ever made public? |
