While out my brother in law, who is of very low intelligence (thank you tax payers for you pay him not to work due to his 'problem') found some pop up that told him how to turn off my Norton anti virus etc long enough for the evil beings to load a new home page for anti virus software down loads and onto my work bar (where you have the open items like volume control and that you are connected to the net, the same bar as the start button is) that open repeatedly telling me that the potential of worms, trojans, spyware etc exist....again trying to get me to buy their product. My Norton scan showed everything is okay other than monster.com collecting info but I cannot get rid of the unwanted 'system alerts' that are phony and the opening web page (yes I went to options and tried to make yahoo my page). I don't want to pay hundreds of dollars in bribes to get these garbage warnings removed.
I have a Dell lap top with Windows XP Profesional if that helps. Please help! I'm about to toss this sucker into the trash if I see that 'warning' that pops up every ten seconds or so. Thank you. |

In this order:
1 - Can you roll it back to a previous date? 2 - NEVER let this guy onto your computer again (password) 3 - Would that problem be CoolWebSearch? "CWShredder removes these browser hijackers. CoolWebSearch installs dozens of bookmarks–mostly to porn Web sites–on your desktop, changes your home page without asking, and continually changes it back if you attempt to correct it. Furthermore, it significantly slows down the performance of your PC, and introduces modifications which cause Microsoft Windows™ to freeze, crash or randomly reboot." - Get rid of it with http://www.trendmicro.com/cwshredder/ 4 - Ad-Aware, SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot, and (I hate Norton) an online virus-scan with Trend Micro Housecall http://www.trendmicro.com/hc_intro/default.asp - ALL of them, please, they're free and they're all highly trusted and recommended. 5 - Call Dell tech support - there's an easy (hidden) method to roll it back to the state it was in when you bought it (but I think you'll lose data, so back up all your data) 5 - Punch your brother-in-law in the nose. |

Thank you.
1. I knew how to do this with my old system not this new one. 2. Done. His problem is he wants people to think he is smart (he has a very low IQ) so he tried being a computer wiz, I never thought he'd have the guts as I'm not the nicest person. 3. I like it and will try it. 4. I'll try 'em too! 5. He will just call the sheriff and I'll be off to jail. The good news is he told my wife he was tired of her b.s. and she gave him until April to leave. Thanks again! I'm still open to suggestions! |

The rollback didn't work? Didja roll back far enough?
You don't have to visit porn sites to catch coolwebsearch, maybe HE did, or else got attracted by one of those "kewl free gamez and mp3s" links, and got you into hot water. So try the other fixes, see what happens. Then: Wait till the problem is happening (something's on the taskbar) and ctrl-alt-del. Select "applications". See what's running - if there's something running that you don't recognize, that's your culprit, and a simple Google of that item should lead you to a fix. Do the same and select "processes." This will produce a daunting list of cryptic file names, but many can be recognized and all can be quickly Googled, leading to a page for each that describes the process either as (for example) "this is an essential Windows process" or "this is one of the most irritating pieces of spyware ever." |

If all else fails, then reinstall windows. I can reinstall windows with all of it's updates, all of my programs, and have all my settings like I like them in about 2 hours. It is all done automatically. All I have to do is insert my disk, hit a few keys, and it does this rest.

This may sound dumb but since they are web pages aren't they associated with the net so reloading windows wouldn't effect them since they would just be there when I go back on line? I'll tell you this, I can't believe companies are dense enough to think this type of tactic is good for business.
