At the risk of sounding ignorant, can someone please define the terms "hold-out" and "pull" and explain their uses.

A "hold-out" holds something out of reach until you need it. It can then deliver whatever it is (usually cards or coins) into your hand.
A "pull" is typically used to make something vanish. Essentially, it's the opposite of a hold-out. The hold-out delivers something, a pull takes it away. Just to add to the confusion, many hold-outs also vanish things too, just by a different method.
No trees were killed in the making of this message, but a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.
