Is this the rock and roll cups and balls? If it is you can see Tim Ellis perform it at seemagic.co.uk. I loved this routine. It was really original. Everything flew past me the first time. The sunglasses stole the show for me. Fantastic.

My S.A.M. Assembly (#3, go Chicago!) just presented a lecture by Tim Ellis and Sue-Anne Webster, and I'm in total agreement: his rendition of the Cups & Balls takes the effect a lot further in terms of theater. It's great fun to watch -- and after he explained it, it was even more fun to watch his ingenious solutions to a number of technical challenges.
However, I was just saying the very words yesterday to a friend that Rey Rey voiced independently on the 17th: that the effect, while a classic demonstration of manipulative, so far doesn't offer anything to those of us who prefer storytelling-based magical performance. What is the logic in using balls to penetrate cups? Why do they disappear, reappear, penetrate cups, and multiply, and why are we doing this other than to show what brilliant manipulators (as opposed to true magicians) we are? While JonTown may believe that "Superimposing a contrived story onto a ritual tends to some across as insincere anyway," it has been proven that when words, motivation, and ritual are blended together well, it results in some very effective theater (hence, bizarre magick). So back to the question: why would a magician/non-manipulator perform this ritual? Maybe it's to dramatize a ghost story, with white balls playing the part of the ghosts who seem to appear, disappear, and walk through walls at will. Maybe the cups have been handed down from Merlin, who used them in conjunction with a small crystal ball in a game he designed to train young Arthur in the uses of perception and intuition. Or maybe, done very slowly and without all the repetition, it's a demonstration of mind over matter -- through the power of your mind, the ball physically and realistically melts through the cups. Hmmm. Thanks, Rey Rey, for voicing a problem that's been knocking around in my head. Here's hoping we find a solution soon!
