Hi everyone
I really love the shadow coin routines however I always hate using the extra coin or a shell of some sort. I currently perform a couple of Daniel Garcia coin routines called Shade and Only Four which use only 4 coins and work well together. Can anyone suggest other shadow coin routines which only use 4 coins? Thanks! |

I get confused when a magician asks about a trick in terms of method. The practical aesthetic here is that one ordinarily seeks the most magical looking method that one can reliably and cost effectively use in one's performances.
On the good news side, the coin assembly "Matrix" <- Al Schneider invented this and some other assemblies using covers and/or a handkerchief don't use any extras. Perhaps someday Armando Lucero will let loose his "menagerie" routine which uses four cards and four coins and ... lots of clever ideas.
...to all the coins I've dropped here

Personally I have yet to see a four coin only version of Chink-a-Chink that looks as good as the original or the shell version. My suggestion is to figure out how to get the extras you need into play. The simplicity and economy of the original is very hard to beat, in my opinion.
JT has a good suggestion, too! I haven't been able to make the steal work yet*, but once I do I'm sure I'll add Matrix to the list of tricks I do for people. -Travis * In my hands it just doesn't look good enough to pass intense scrutiny yet. I feel like the trick is so fast that I want to make sure I can do it while being closely watched (so that I can go slow enough that people don't feel like they missed something). I think the steal is supposed to be covered by one's attitude that the trick "hasn't started yet." This works--I did perform it once to great reactions using that kind of cover--and I want to be able to feel comfortable enough to do the move in front of a bigger audience where I don't have sure control over people's attention during that kind of relaxed, "nothing's happening yet" kind of moment. It's a great trick! |

Same as Travis, I personally have also yet to see a four coin only version of Chink-a-Chink that looks as good as the original or the shell version. There are moments when the so-called 4-coin-and-barehands-only routines can't reproduce.
My personal approach is whenever I can I do the original Shadow Coin routine. To me it's just so hard to beat. Yes a gimmick is used and one might think it's not as "clean" as the other. But then very likely its just what magicians think. I mean we know it involves a gimmick so we tend to be afraid that it will be discovered. But the fact is spec. seldomly check if you present your routine smoothly and in a certain entertaining manner. They will just enjoy the entire process and not trying to figure out how you do it. Very often it is the "I challenge you to figure out how I did that" attitude that arouses their suspicions. Having said that, I'm *not* saying those 4-coin-and-barehands routines are bad. I also love them. I always practise DG's Only 4 just in case. There are indeed situations that you can only use 4 coins, or meet specs that always grab your props. If you still prefer only using 4 coins then Jonathan's suggestion is all you need. Just include 4 more cards with you and you can find tons of resources of similar effects. Good luck with this effect, it's a simple yet wonderful piece of magic.
It only takes a minute to learn how it is done, but takes a lifetime to learn how to do it.

I learned both the garcia routine and one by joe rindfleisch. I decided one day to sit and just create a shadow coins complete with backfire, surprisingly I did.
