Hi Steve,
Any chance you'll share the story of your first(?) performance of Multiple Impact at FFFF? To those of us lucky enough to witness it, it couldn't have been better if it was planned that way. Thanks for your contribution to Magic and to my end of April Weekends! Best Regards, Gary |

Gary,
Thanks for digging up my personal nightmare. The problem is that it was all ad-lib and my brain was concentrating so much on digging myself out of what could have been a nightmare that I don't have a clear recollection of how it appeared to the audience. There is a video of the performance out there and I would love to have or see a copy. I won't list the names here (which I do remember) but it started when one of the magicians forgot his card and when asked the name, he gave the name of a card someone else had selected. I knew he was wrong - and it was obvious that the selection process prevented two from selecting the same card - but since I had it as one of the selections in my hands, I "revealed" it. Then when I got to the guy who actually selected that card, I "re-revealed" it. Everyone realized what had happened (that he had miscalled his card) and it started getting crazy. I move on to the next guy when the first guy shouts out, "Wait a minute. I selected the 4H." So, since I had the 4H in my hands as well, I revealed that one which really gave the appearance that it wouldn't have mattered which card anybody named, I could find it. As Gary can vouch, the above recap only covers two of the selections. Everything went that way for all 7 of the selections even though I ultimately found all of the cards. This includes the final revelation when I asked someone who didn't select a card to name his card. He made one up on the spot. Fortunately, while everyone knew he hadn't selected a card and thus I must be in trouble, he happened to name 1 of the 7 that had been selected so I reached down on the table, "re-revealed" it, and took applause for that one - further making it look like I was simultaneously error prone and bullet-proof. The presentation landed me a lecture at 4F the next year where I won the VIP award. I've often said that Multiple Impact has the highest risk factor because so many things can happen even when you don't do anything wrong. That's why I love the trick. It always gets my adrenaline up. BTW, Paul Gertner was the guest of honor that year. That night, he opened his set by bringing out a stack of about 400 typewritten pages. He said it was the instructions to the trick I had done earlier in the day. |

Steve,
Had the trick come off without a hitch, you would have (only) performed a great card trick. As it turned out, you showed us all how important it is to be able to recover, improvise and entertain without missing a beat. In the grand scheme of things, we were blessed by your nightmare. See you next month, Gary |

It was the highlight of the convention for me. (And that sayin’ something because that was also the day I fell in love with Lisa Menna. She changed her dress during her close up performance.) To this day Steve has been in my top 10 comedy magicians. As gkfreed says “it couldn't have been better if it was planned that way” DeWayne |

DeWayne,
I'm typing this without my middle fingers which tremble whenever that story is brought up. I still have someone come up to me at most conventions in the southeast and offer me a cup of coffee. Just a footnote - the line was, "Started with a bird and ended with a turd" since I was flipped off very early in the act. The "turd" was Multiple Impact and the apparent inability to find the selections. Thanks for dragging me down that Memory Lane... Best, Steve |
