Could this not be done with a normal deck and the card still be handled by the spectator (as to not spend 11 bucks)? I have an idea how to do it. Maybe I am missing something and my idea will not work. I really like the sound of this though.

Gede Nibo- My name here on the Café is actually from a Karate master from Japan. His name is Masutatsu Oyama. I thought it sounded better than Aaron .
I can PM you my thoughts on this effect. My thoughts are not to use a DL and the spectator can handle the card. You can consider the deck a gaff, but you can make it from a normal deck of cards in about 2 minutes. I may misunderstand the effect so my thoughts may not work. I will send a PM to you now. Aaron

Ok how about this ...
Normal deck with all of the names. On top of the deck you have a DB with the name on one side and indifferent name on the other. The name you want is face down. Do the effect exactly as described. When you go to reveal the name, place chosen card face up on top. DL . TA DA! Finish. Ok it's not perfect and may require more touches or just some good acting and Kahones. But, I think I'm going to have to go to the Magic shop and get me a blank Phil! Brilliant BABA!!!! C

Right. I have a simliar way using a DL after bringing the card they point to (face up spread) to the top face of the deck. leaves it obviously unexaminable, but wows them just the same.
but yes. ive gotten a few emails giving me their ideas on a non ga** version. they ALL work. but d a m m I t JUST GET THE DECK! LOLOLOL...ehem... if it cost an arm, some claws, a leg and a horn, okay, I could see working hard on a non ga** version, but lo! hark! its only like 12 bucks!!! gas prices notwithstanding! love! I think I will state the obvious here. I think we all know that the method is not important, it is the presentation.
Gede Nibo has got the presentation! That is what makes this effect so awesome! I have read other presentations that Baba has posted on the Café, and I have to say that method is not important. I can't remember where I found it, but he had one about a rock and if you put it to your forehead and believed, it would change colors. The presentation of being in this back street and talking to an old mistike man, sold the effect as not being a "trick". He also told us what the method was. He changed an age old method or "magic trick" into a profound life experience. I know I would have been changed had I experienced it in real life. Heck...I was changed just by reading it! He started my thought process on method is nothing, presentation is everything. So.....find the method to this effect that you enjoy and present it like Gede Nibo described. I know I am going to give it a go. Aaron

While generally I agree with you Oyama, if you're method is a clear as cut glass, no presentation will save you.

I do agree with you Oyama in principle but one has to consider that the method one uses will in fact impact the dramatics of the presentation.
Example: The method I gave using a DB card and DL blah blah blah...really isn't good at all. (I knew that as I typed but I needed to brainstorm and get it out of my head to see if it could add or take away anything) but in the end that method while giving more freedom to view the pack also makes the handling more "hands on". And the revelation less "FREE" at the end. Those things (as I'm sure you already know ) will impact certain moments in the performance. I'm not saying one couldn't get away with it, it just may not be the best to ADD anything to Baba's idea. In fact it may in the end take away too much. As for Baba's approach using the blank Phil's: the presentation and handling are much cleaner. This allows much more freedom in Baba's brilliant presentation (again, I know you already know that.) Max Maven likes to call this the Trap Door. Every effect has a big fat open trap door in the middle of it. And, your job is to perform around this trap door with out anybody knowing that it's there, and more importantly DON'T FALL IN. How one does this will effect how they present the effect. Do you jump over it? Dance around it? You can't make a big circle around the stage each time you have to get across, that would be obvious... All of this will effect your performance. So, I totally agree with you Oyama, presentation is EVERYTHING but the method will play in BIG part in dictating how that presentation will go. Best C
