Hi! I have been in and out on the forumn lately. I have had a kid's/ family ministry web site for some time now (www.montgomeryfamilyministries.com) and this is the majority of our yearly schedule. However, I do have much time in the late fall and winter- early spring for public schools. I have always heard it was good to have separate web sites for different markets. Which I think is a good idea. I just recently began a new site that is supposed to target public schools at http://www.schoolshows.org . It is not conected with our ministry web site whatsoever; however, we do have a link from our ministry web site to our school show web site.
I know I am really taking a chance here in asking for critiques, but I am looking for honesty. I am here to learn how to improve on these areas. What might you do to improve or do differently on our http://www.schoolshows.org site?

To me, the graphic text is not so easy to read. I also don't care for the Harrington font and the fact that it is above the logo. To me the font should be clearer and below thw logo banner. On a dial-up connection, the photos take too long too load. Why is "Home Page" and "click" on the home page?? I also had to scroll sideways on this page. 'About' page has poor photos and mixed type faces. 'Programs' page: "guranteed!" should read "guaranteed". It's misspelled. I'll stop now. Overall, there are too many bad photos as well as fancy graphic text and mixed fonts. I can honestly say that the site is not very professional. My apologies for not offering a constructive critique or further assistance but I normally get paid for such a service. Hopefully I've helped in some small way. Best wishes, |

Consider using flash. You'll get better graphical website with that. If you don't want to use flash, try using some templates... available as freebies or paid, on the internet. And... the colour combinations are not too good, especially the hover buttons.
Or a better option - get a pro do it. Not everyone can make websites... just as everyone cannot perform magic.

Templatesbox.com is one of my favourites although I must say that I'm loving what CSS can do with a layout (even though it feels like it will take forever to fully learn it.)

I truly appreciate all the recommendations on this that I have been receiving. I am for sure not a pro at web design and development. I did this kind of quick to get something up, but do plan to make a drastic change to it. Your advice is very appreciated!

I think it's a good start, it has pontential. I believe a video would help something to let people see more of you and how you work. It's easy to just tape yourself and then post it on you tube and just link it to your site, (we do that on our site) I also think the page is a little plain, it doesn't' tell enough of who you are, and maybe adding more pages to the site will help, like a photo ablum page, an about us page, a comment page from people who have hired you, something like that, I don't I just wanted to click on more pages. Ok good luck

I agree with Utkarsh Sinha that Flash would definitely make the website more appealing. Having animations makes a world of difference. Unfortunately, making Flash animations is not as easy as HTML. If I could only make one suggestion, it would be to avoid the plain white background. I know you have a lot of text and photos to add color to the page, but the plain white background really makes it bland. You should take your time trying different background images, tile patterns, etc. and see what you can do. Also, look into adding borders or frames. Those can also make a page look more professional.
Also, are you using an editor such as Dreamweaver or FrontPage? Or are you hardcoding everything? -Ryan- |
