Thought I'd share this little funny with everyone. Yesterday, my oldest son asked for my assitance with a worksheet. It was for extra credit, and was pertaining to significant dates in the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. He told me his teacher told everyone NOT to use the internet to obtain the information. So, what do I do, I get the "C" and the "K" encyclopedia volumes out. He gives me the funniest look and asks, "Mom, what are those??" As I was opening it up to the correct section, I told him, "This is how we got information before the internet." He then did one of those "OOOoooooohhhhh, okay.....well, my teacher just said not to use the internet, she didn't say anything about not using that." So, we found most of the information he needed....without using the internet! He was quite pleased. I thought it was funny that he had no idea what an encyclopedia is!

I, through the sacrifices of my parents, wrote many reports via research from the WORLD BOOK ENCYCLOPEDIA. The associated CHILDCRAFT books were heaven to just read and absorb different things about history, cultures and ideas.
The nice thing about it was, I knew I was getting information from an authorative source. That's not so on the Internet, since you have to really check on WHERE the information comes from. Boy, that brings back the days! |

Great story Margarette!
Nice to know that the old Encyclopaedia turned out to be more use than just a paper weight. don't fear though, the days of the Encyclopaedia are not doomed. Heres a list of the reasons why. (Please add to this if you think of any others): Things you can do with an Encyclopaedia (that you cant do with the Internet): Press Flowers. Stand on it to reach high places. Cut a hole in the middle to store your valuables. Use it as Toilet paper. Break someones nose with it. Use it as a lever (on a bookshelf) to access a secret passageway. Use it to protect your face from the sun when you are asleep in a hammock. Swat flys. Swat dogs (they're big books you know!) prop up the car while you change a flat. Could go on and on (and usually do) but I have work to do!
The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion which stands at the cradle of true art and true science. Whoever does not know it and can no longer wonder, no longer marvel, is as good as dead, and his eyes are
