He went to school here at the University of Iowa, and was one of the founders of our famous Writers' Workshop. The man single-handedly turned science fiction into great literature.

His opening line to Slaughterhouse Five is etched in my mind:

"Listen: Billy Pilgrim has become unstuck in time."

He'll be missed.

He's up in Heaven now, just like Issac Asimov. Smile

There should be ten times the number of posts made here for Mr. Vonnegut a great man than there are for that idiot Don Imus.

I heard his last words were "Nappy Headed Ho's" and that he was adopting a poor third world child because he didn't know that he was the father of Anna Nicole's baby so perhaps now they'll be more talk about him

"It contained toys from childhood, the bones from a Bermuda Ern, and many other curiosities --including the tuxedo he had worn to a senior dance just prior to graduation from Thomas Jefferson High School in Dayton, Ohio, in 1924. Trout was born in Bermuda, and atttended grammar school there. But then his family moved to Dayton. His highschool was named after a slave owner who was also one of the world's greatest theoreticians on the subject of human liberty."

Classic.

My favorites: Mother Night, Sirens of Titan, and Slaughterhouse Five. Runners up: Cat's Cradle and Player Piano.

A friend of mine was telling me how he had spent the last year re-reading all of Vonnegut. And all of it still stood up.

Not just a college thing.

A brave and courageous man, in his life and work. He will be missed.

I didn't even know he had died! This really saddens me. I have only read one of his books, Breakfast Of Champions, and it was one of the most amazing books I have ever read. Once I get through a huge pile of books I've been meaning to read, Slaughter-house Five will be read. After that, I plan to read the rest of the classics. I know I have only read one of his books, but I can tell how gifted and creative his genius mind was.

1. Breakfast of Champions
2. Bagambo Snuffbox (the whole thing)
3. Cat's Cradle.

Give my regards to Asimov Kurt.

If anyone has seen his site, he has a beautiful line drawing of an open cage. Free
