I've been working on the Invisible Palm plot for quite some time now, performing the Larry Jennings version often. The thing I disliked the most about the effect was having to use the deck for the third vanish. While that technique Jennings used was simple and effective, in my opinion, it changed the flow of the routine, even though the rationale for using the deck was justified.
I'd like to offer for your critique and enjoyment one of the two routines I've come up with while working with the plot. I think the handling seems fair and casual, and the magic visual. This method can be used completely impromptu, and uses no sticky stuff as some routines I've seen done, just "years of practice, and self denial" as Jay Marshall would put it. I hope you like and would love to hear some constructive critique of the routine. The camera angle is a bit weird, but the routine should still be pretty easy to follow. http://youtube.com/watch?v=iY8kF2AugMA

I like the "careless" laying down of the cards on the table.
The handling of the last card is very ineteresting. |

Will-Ace,
I agree that the last card handling is interesting....it's one of two ways that I utilize that extra card. The other is a bit more novel, yet more straight forward. The idea in this version is that I wanted to give the appearance of being clean at the end, even though I'm clearly not. As far as the way I table the cards, I wanted to create the idea that everything was extremely fair. When a lot of people perform this type of effect, they are very gentle in tabling their doubles. To me that tips where the double is. So to create a casual feel to the entire effect, can and is disarming to many.

Vinny,
the hard part about this is that it's not performed on a close up mat..... I actually performed it on a regular kitchen countertop, which made most of the moves a bit more difficult, especially the arrival of cards on the table. I never carry a close up mat with me, so I have to be able to perform this on just about any surface.

You must have worked it for quite some time to get it to look so layback and casual. Just a question. On the "wink, wink" last vanish, your right hand shoots out of frame like a rocket on roller skates. Assuming that I understand the "wink, wink" nature of what's happening there, does it really need to go out of sight? Of course it could be that the camera is so focused on the hands that it exaggerates the movement. Probably looks just fine in person. Thanks again for sharing. |

Dan,
You're absolutely correct. In a live performance that hand falls naturally to the side or to the table edge. Unfortunately, it was an unflattering camera angle.

Eric I noticed that kitchen worktop straight away and thought o' oh... what a good idea to practice the hard way outside the comfort zone for every eventuality.. Nice work.

Yeah, I figured.
You know, a lot of professionals have always told me that the Invisible Palm routine is money in the bank for pure laymen entertainment. I would just nod but I never really liked it basically for your reason concerning the last vanish. Well I'm running out of excuses. Now if I can just figure out how to eliminate the "leader" Ace issue. I always wanted to have all four Aces travel. By the way, I'll PM you, Eric on something that occurred to me concerning that last vanish. It just might be practical. Later. |
