Anyone who steals (you can steal by buying) someone else's vision, for what the experience of magic should be, is a knock-off/wannabee/copyist. Websites like ellusionist.com sell David Blaine's vision as "street magic", so in that sense, yes, they are simply knock-offs, and so is anyone who follows the vision sold to them without questioning it. (They would be the ones who believe every Ellusionist product is a "must-have".) I won't say that everyone who purchases from them is a copycat, however, or that every one of their products is something only David Blaine would do. [And yet, I will admit that I came up with "Puncture" when I was 14 years old, while trying to come up with hard-hitting "Blaine magic." (Yes, I went through this cloning phase as well, as mostly everyone does.) Interestingly enough, years after I had dropped it from my professional act, it was picked up by Blaine himself.] Of course, it is not uncommon or new in the magic community to have clones. Besides there being Blaine copyists, there are Ammar, Burton, Copperfield, Brown, McBride (etc.) knock-offs everywhere (including TV). By the way, it is interesting to note that Blaine himself doesn't call himself a street magician.

Excellent post. I have always felt the same about co-opting someone's vision by purchase or research. But that's for another thread.
Interesting about Blaine and "street magician." By calling his first special "Street Magic", doesn't that make him a "street magician" by sheer logic? Or is this something that, seeing what has occurred, he is trying to distance himself from? Interesting things to consider. Brad |

Chris Capehart made an interesting comment at a recent lecture, pointing out the fact that there's a difference between a "street magician" and a "magician performing in the street".

...and a street person.
(At least, that's the point he made when I saw him. That stuck with me.) |
