Michael Close said on one of his videos the following line which is similar to Bill's and struck me as the perfect thing to say.
"Well, perhaps another time." You sound classy, understanding, and respectful.

I feel it is best to have the server inform the guest that there is a magician and also to have him/her to introduce you. This will give you more statis and you are less likely to seem like another servent to them. This method probably works best in upscale restaurants.

PS- if you go this route make sure you go over what to say with the server, this will insure things go more smoothly

I have not worked restaurants, but I would like to when I feel that I am ready. From reading some posts it seems to me that each person has to find the approach that works for them. However, on the first night I would be nervous about how the management would view people turning you down. Does the person who hired you understand this possibility? Can this really work against you keeping a job or even getting one if you are doing a free night?

The management would be foolish to think that everyone wants to see magic. do a good job and don't worry about a thing

"Hi, my name is Scott Shelton and I'm a professional magician. Would you mind if I entertained you for a moment?"
This accomplishes several things: 1. It introduces you. 2. It lets them know you perform magic and that you are apparently good at it. 3. It will only take a moment. 4. You are promising ENTERTAINMENT, not amazement. Everyone likes to be entertained. (Of course, you should still deliver on the amazement.) |

I have to agree with James Schwab. It really does depend on what you feel comfortable doing. I myself walk up with a big smile and say "Hi how are you doing, (restuarant name) has asked me here tonight to perform for you and with your permission, I would like to perform some magic for you." That is what I am most comfortable doing. Now on the other hand a very good friend of mine who performs at several different restuarants during the week, walks up with a fire wallet and asks if anyone at the table has lost thier wallet. After the fire wallet then he asks if they would like to see some magic. That approach has worked very well for him.
Reading from previous posts I can see that a lot of people here don't agree with using a PROP, which is cool. In my opinion, I don't think using a prop like a fire wallet and asking the customers if they lost something is necessarily a "CON", merley just patter to that perticular effect to gain attention. Again just my opinion. You must do what works for you and what you feel more comfortable doing. LOVE PEACE AND CHICKEN GREASE.... |

I do not do anything "flashy" first. I am of the school that believes the person is more important than the trick. I try to build relationships and make people feel important and welcome. I don't want to "spring it on them" that I am the magician. I remember their names the next time they come in, etc. This may not be the only way to do it, but it's the only way for me.

I've worked restaurants a long time and the approach that works best for me is this:" Hello, how are you this evening? My name is Bill, welcome to (name of establishment). Is this your first visit with us?" Most of the time, they think I'm the manager. I chat for a few seconds to get a feel for the table. They could be mad, upset, he could be proposing to her, etc. If I feel good about the table I'll ask them where they are from, ask them if they've ever been to NYC and start with color monte or ultimate monte and go from there. The main thing is that I'm not being intrusive or rude. Above all, I represent that establishment and I need to make them look good.

Interesting topic! Thanks for many nice approaches, everybody!
I think that have a reason to go to the table is imported! If that, do magic, give them a present or the need of there help... it´s up to you I also believe in: It`s not what you say it´s how you say it... Therefore I think you can practical say anything if you say it the right way... It´s all about attitude =) I opened with Chop cup and my reason is to ask for help to go to there table.. (for cold approach) But a admit a don´t do much restaurant work most cooperate gigs..

I also do a lot of restaurants, up to about 5 a week and in some way's my approach is slightly different in that I rarely ask directly if they want to see any magic. Coming from a Sales background this is a closed question and invites a no. Equally not asking has it's own problems as you can be in danger of pushing magic on people, which is potentially even worse.
My approach is initially to ask them whether everything is ok, at this point they often assume I'm the manager, I'll then usually have a bit of small talk during which time I'll begin to get a picture of the table. Then I explain I'm the resident magician, this is a point when potentially they could tell you they don't like magic but before they say anything I ask them another question. "Have you ever seen magic up this close"? There answer here can be very helpful in knowing how to go from here. If I feel a negative vibe from them at this point, which is not often, then I may ask if they want to see any magic in order to give them a chance to say no, but 99% of the time I'll turn to a man and say can I ask you a question, I'm usually a good judge of these things and I was wondering are you a little psychic? I usually get a few laughs from from the conversation as friends point out psycho is more like it, but I then go on to do an effect which makes the guy look very good sets the feel good factor for the rest of the performance. |
