Hi all
i'am looking for an effect from Billy McComb .A friend of mine saw him performed during a lecture few Years ago... The effect : a ring vanish from the magician hand and it found in a box who is on the stage... Does someone could help me to find the name of that trick and if it's in a book or lecture notes ? THANK YOU PASCAL from France |

I’ve had the joy and privilege of seeing Mr. McComb perform a number of times over the decades for non-magician paid audiences. That is, I saw him work in real world non-magic convention and non-lecture venues. I actually saw him on a cruise ship over 45 years ago (it is when I first met the man). I’ve also attended two lectures and workshops that he held in the past ten years.
I did not seem him perform the ring to box trick in any of the performances or lectures. In fact, I could say that he did not do the same thing in any of his performances (each performance was separated by a minimum of then years so one could expect some change). I would guess that Mr. McComb used a very straightforward and technically easy method to accomplish the effect. Any “Ring to Box” or “Ring to Nest of Boxes” would be your start point in developing your version of the routine. Tommy Wonder has a version in his books and on his DVD set. Any prop being sold as a “Ring to…” would have a basic routine. That at least gives you a start.

Pascal:
If you can find a set of Billy's lecture notes, "At Home With McComb", the routine is described in there. Harry is correct in that the handling is very straight forward and technically easy. Good luck. Doug |

I really don’t remember the exact specific acts I saw of McComb. The cruse was almost 45 years ago! I do remember how funny he was and that we saw him three different times (three different acts!). He was still performing his Aquarium them act one night. It included, Ariel Fishing and the production of a stack of fish bowls. Interspersed within the act he performed his linking finger ring routine and he also performed his coin to bottle. I believe he closed on it.
Another act he did cards and comedy, it included a card to wallet, and an audience participation card playing thing (which I later found out was called the “Nap Hand”). He did the coin to bottle again using a different kind (country and denomination) of coin. He relied more on humor than tricks and props during this act. He closed on the “inertia” trick (eggs to glass) His third act (to me the best but he later told me that he considered his first act as his “number one act”) included his color changing silks, his egg bag (with whiskey shot final production) and the bill to lemon. He closed with bill to lemon. Later, I saw him in a club in London. His act included his egg bag, his linking finger rings, the color changing silks, and bill to lemon. That was it! He kept it pretty simple and chattered continually as he worked. His humor was his best misdirection. I more remember the man and not the tricks (as he once told me “if they are remembering what you are doing, then you are doing it wrong!” this over a pint in a NYC bar!).
