Hey guys, I'm currently having two issues with my doves. First of all...There's no eggs yet and the female dove has been sitting lesser on the nest. In fact, I reckon its becoming another 'perch'. I'm afraid to remove the nest just in case she's gonna lay eggs soon.
secondly, My flight trained dove keeps being pecked at whenever she returns to the cage after training. As far as I'm aware... they're all female except the cooing bird... so it cant really be territory...theories anyone? |

Kyle, doves don't always lay eggs everytime they sit on a nest. There's nothing you can do about it to force the issue. You have to use your best judgement as to whether to remove the nest. There's no guarantee either way.
I don't remember how big you said your cage was, but if you have all the birds in one cage, the pecking may be a case of overcrowding. They vision the returning bird as an intruder. Do they fight continually after the return or just when the dove first comes back?

It's just when she returns...for less than 10 mins. She gets pecked around the beak region, but she does nothing...

Hi Kyle:
I have the same problem with pecking. I just leave them alone, and they stop on their own. Unless they are getting hurt, I would just turn a blind eye to it. As for the eggs, I have been breeding doves for a long time. It could be that your doves are just practicing for coming eggs. I had that happen to me several times when my doves were young. Then, you will get eggs that are just "practice", too. What I do is, when the eggs are laid, wait about 4 days, and then remove the egg and put it in front of a light. If there is no signs of life, I throw the egg away. When a egg is laid, it will hatch in 2 weeks, give or take a day. Then, the parents will take care of them on their own. If you have any further questions, there are some good sites on breeding doves out there in a Google search. Good Luck, Brian |

Hey Brian, are you sure you meant to say the eggs would hatch in 2 weeks? I've raised doves for years and have never had one hatch in less that 21 days or 3 weeks.
