While waiting for the libraray to open, I was talking with the two young people who were here ahead of me. I did a few card tricks for them and they were actually impressed!

Yep...sometimes, out of the blue, the opportunity presents itself for a chance to entertain. Glad you were ready!

This is the very reason why I choose to study and perform magic. It's such a wonderful too to brighten another person's life.

As a side job and to pay for it I teach computers to 1-5 graders at my kid's school.
I was walking thru the school today, just goofing off, waiting to pick them up and I stopped at the second grade classroom. A little kid looks at me, "Mr. Cesta, can you make this disappear?" He held up a plastic water bottle cap. I shook my head no. When I do an impromptu trick the kids go into a frenzy and the teachers get upset at ME. A second later him and a few girls come up. He says it again. One girl says, "Mr. Cesta, is magic real? I think it is, Lauren says there's no such thing as real magic." I don't usually answer things like that, the kids can believe what they want. So, the two girls walk away but this one boy holds up the plastic bottle cap. I took it in my left hand and with a pen in my right hand did the old strike vanish. It was cool 'cause when the cap hit the pen it made a loud clunking noise. The kid's mouth opened and his eyes LIT up. While he was freakin' out I moved the cap from my right hand to my left (behind my back!) and pulled the cap from his ear. He LIT up again. That was that. I did what he wanted. I made the cap vanish. The moral of the story, Learn the strike vanish. John Cesta |

Mark Wilson gives some good instruction on using events like this as means of promoting yourself as a magician. Bring a little magic into the lives of people you meet and deal with. I started doing it for a waitress here and there, the gal at the dry cleaners, people in line at the store, etc. I ended up with more shows than I ever wanted, and got know as "The Magician" around town. But even if you don't do it as a form of marketing, it is wonderful to brighten someone's day with a little magic.

I had a similar moment while waiting in line for an Amazing Johnathan show in Vegas a few years back.
I was just playing with my cards while waiting and a guy came up to me and said "lemme show you something" so I gave him my cards and he did a.. beginner trick, not a bad one just nothing that a practicing magician would show to another. now I'm not one to do tricks at another's show, but I had to top him, so I ended up doing a small show for about 10 people in line. and after it all the guy told me he wasnt a magician, that's the only trick he knew! -Steve |

It's good if you can get the right audience. That seems to be the key.

David Williamson's Striking Vanish is a thing of beauty!
So visual and strong and you can use so many objects to perform it with. Should be in the repertoire of every magician... |
