I have just seen Laurent baretta's peformance on youtube, and it was so impressive!!I have never known who manipulates cards so beautifully.
You can see it here
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUQDdSRrjLA

and you can see his full routine from his homepage
http://www.laurentberetta.com/

I wonder whether he is worldwide famous or not. I live in japan, performing magic for nearly 5 years, but didn't know him at all. Have he ever participated in FISM??
Does anyone know about his lecture book or DVD??
I am sorry for asking a lot, but any answer will be appreciated.

Hi shinji,
Beretta did participate in FISM 2003. You could read some report from http://users.tpg.com.au/users/katzkin/PUBFISM2003.htm.

I have to say that I do like the fact that to me it was more a matter of him knowing his music and having the music become part of the act and manipulation itself. So many manipulators just use the music as background to the act. In a way there is this separation that the music is just there and nothing more. I think we as manipulators should learn that the music we use can become a part of the act itself. Use the music to engage the audience and have the music tie directly in to what you are doing. In this way, you are also manipulating the sound as well. The sound becomes an element of the act and draws the audiences attention inward. When you really understand your music, your music can enhance your act ten-fold. The music can convey emotion to the audience.

Yes, I agree with Kyle. Your act will have tempo, pacing, excitement and emotional involvement with the proper music intergrated into the entire performance. In addition you need to select the music pieces that best suit your stage character.

Absolutely. The music is an extension of the character you create on stage. Great stuff james.

This guy is good, I liked that thing at the end where he rips up the one card, and then all that confetti go flying everywhere...very nice.

His music and his movements where right together, and it flowed very well.

very nice,
Danton

I think the video is great and I can understand why everyone likes that. But its not for me that's not really my style and I'm not a fan of his almost techno music. apart from that good I guess.

I'm going to stick my neck out here and risk some criticism. I risk it at the very dear price of perhaps encouraging thought in this area. I personally am so weary of seeing raised eyebrows, nose in the air, "I'm cool" characters on stage. The mindless productions of card, card, card, fan, fan, fan, card, BALL, ball, ball, DOVE, dove, card, card, fan, DOVE, BALL, etc. for ten minutes. While their coreography may be slightly different and their moves may be in a different order, so many manipulation acts are essentially the same. (I will interject this note, I am not singling out Mr. Baretta, I just see this as an opportunity to comment. Furthermore, Mr. Baretta, like many others in this category are supremely skillful.)

In Louisville last summer (SAM national competition), most of the acts were like this. They displayed great skill, but ONLY great skill. Many of the acts lacked entertainment and personality and meaning. After that evening I never wanted to see a card, ball, and bird produced in ANY given order again.

I'm not down on cards, balls, or birds, but I would like to see many of these supremely skillful manipulators put as much thought and creativity into their presentation as they do practice into their chops.

Just some musings -

shalom,
I agree, especialy when it comes to card manipulation.I've never undrstood why this particular branch of the manipulative arts focuses so much on production, production, prduction,PRODUCTION.Alot of us just simply have a hard time thinking outside of magicdom.Presentation and method first; magic will come later.

Forrest: All I can say is a huge AMEN to you my friend. That is exactly what it is all about and what every manipulator should strive for. Creativity allows the art to grow.
