I recently bought a set of stainless steel kitchen knives and skewers (I think they are stainless steel). Anyway, after the initial run through the dishwasher, everything came out with what look like rust spots on them! Is there a way to safely remove these rust spots without damaging the knives and skewers? Does anybody have any good suggestions? Also, what would cause the knives to rust in that manner after only one washing in the dishwasher?

We've had some table knives to do this, but just on one or two of them, and only in particular spots. All it takes is a quick scrub with a Sctch Brite pad, and they look great. I don't know why this happens.
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

SS can rust.
How much and how fast depends on the grade, amount of chromium and other factors. |

If you bought really "gourmet quality" knives, they may be carbon steel but not stainless.
On the other hand, I try to keep my own kitchen "working chef" grade, so as to actually get the cooking done without spending all day polishing "prettyware" or fighting "consumer grade" stuff that doesn't work, and my knives are stainless germproof-white-handle, mostly serrated, never-sharpen from the restaurant-supply store. I like them better than the gourmet Zwilling - Henckel - etc ones I used to have. |

If stainless steel is scratched or drug against carbon steel you will contaminate the stainless and it may rust.

Get a good set of high carbon steel (not stainless) knives. Easier to sharpen and keep their edge longer than Stainless.

However, they do have a nasty tendency to chip (leaving fragments in your food if you're not careful!), and many require that you send them back to the company for quality resharpening. I have Cutco knives. They are expensive, but I like them very much. |

I recently bought a new set of knives, spoons and forks, and on the box it recommends not using any dish soap that contains citrus because it will cause them to tarnish or rust. Try washing them with a different soap and see if they still show the rust.

Why not get plastic ones? They don't seem to rust.

Actually, just about any user of fine knives or Chef will tell you to NEVER put your knives in the dishwasher. The abrasives found in many dishwashing detergents will dull the blade after one wash. I have a full set of Henckels and my wife washed my paring knife in the dishwasher. You can see a noted difference between it and the rest of the set.
