Mandrake, I am really glad to see this post. You are beginning to see reality as Danny, Koz, Gazzo, and a lot of us on the street.
Hey, start hitting the street as often as you can, then as you see success followed by more success you can consider going somewhere on vacation and working the street there. You may even not only pay for the vacation but even bring home more money than you left with. After these successes you might even join us in the full time world. The only failure is not trying to do what you really want to do. |

Never going to make full time. I don't have what you guys do. I don't have whatever drive or push it is that takes you guys from just "good" to "good enough to make a living at this!"
Plus, and I know this is an excuse on my part, I still don't think Providence is enough of a busker town to make a living at this. I'm pretty certain the guys working the WaterFire aren't stuck in Providence as I am.

Mandrake,
Until you feel up to it you can pretend to busk in many places. Ask to perform at small school functions, cub scout meetings, boys and girls club meetings, church picnics, etc. Do a show for friends, for family, the neighbors, a neighborhood get-together, anything and everything. Set a goal to do 10 in a year.

I was doing that stuff back in '89-'90. I was getting paid for some of it too. Not a lot, but I never thought of myself as being worth "big bucks."
When I lost Westinghouse in '91, something froze up inside. Still trying to pull out of it now.

I would very much like a pouch!!! I'm glad to see you are making your way to become a professional busker!! CONGRATS!!
Been a busker since I was 14 from San Diego; Don Driver was my mentor along with many others like Jimmy Talksalot, Sleeveless (Stephen Sloan), Bob Elliott.

Mandrake I'm still got a lot of stuff to get before I hit the streets. Im currently on getting my table(Thank you cory) and getting some dvds to study. I'm pretty disappointed when I made a deal with someone selling the dvd on lets make a magic deal.Apparently I payed and didn't recieve it after 2 weeks of waiting. So that's a step backwards on my money. Altough I did get some dvd's. I got the Michael Ammar c&b 1 and 2 that bill suggested. I just ordered a bunch of stuff today so hopefully I will get it soon. I ordered Gazzo art of kword keeping, Gazzo reading between the lines, Street threatre, Bob white dvd that bill suggested, And the cellini lecture that amon and gaddy suggested. When I get some more money I will try to obtain the cellini series on street performing.
I'll post more often now since tommorow is my last day of summer school. |

To the person who asked what a monkey fist is. It is a bearing or other round object with weight that has line wrapped around it in a manner kind of looking likea soccer ball. You can look up how to make them on line. They are used to be at the end of a length of line and when a ship pulls into port the monkey fist is swung and tossed the the docking personel who use the line to pull rope over to the dock to tie down the ship. Magicians use them for cups and balls because they don't roll off. Those not 'in the know' make them from leather, those hip to friction and how it effects cups and balls tend to go with nylon line.

Perry,
You mean you bought some DVD's from someone on the Café and they took your money, but didn't send them? |

Rickybobby,
you mentioned RNTII in a post saying that you wanted some names. If you go to the RNTII site and look under "mainstream magic" you will find some quality products at really good prices. All the beat, Tom

My god, maybe you should report them to Steve Brooks.
They shouldn't be allowed to be posting on the "Let's make a magic deal" forum if they are just stealing from Café members. |

A few weeks back I saw a post on monkey fist balls. Then this weekend I had a urge to make them so on saturday I went out and got some leather lace and some marbles from my local hobby shop. I also made the e looking wire jig to help me. I have say that knowing how to make it and making it is a whole other story. It toke me a hour or so to even get the first one and it still had gaps. That night I stayed up pretty late and ended up making 5 red balls.
Then today I went and got some more leather lace but this time in different color. So I made a few of those today. My fingers started to hurt a bit from the tugging and pushing which is mainly the hassle of it.I made a few in different colors. So I toke a few pictures just at first for you to see. Please keep in mind this is my first time ever making these, and it was about only 20 hours ago I started learning. So without further ado You could check it all out at http://s208.photobucket.com/albums/bb265/cupsproject/ |

Rickybobby,
First off...love the name...loved the movie. I think one of the best parts of the movie...and fellas, everyone who considers themselves to be a magician...I strongly urge you to watch a particular part of Talladega Nights. The part I'm talking about is when Rickybobby is down on his luck and scared to drive and in a bar when this hot smoking girl walks in who has been his friend for awhile. She gives him what I consider to be one of the ultimate pep talks for motivating oneself to get out and just ****ING DO IT!!! If you watch the movie you'll know what I'm talking about. When she talks, everytime she says driver and references racing cars....just replace it with Magician...Magic...Performing. Gentlemen...Magic is what we were born to do....it's in our blood....so get out there and dominate the world. That being said....I'm duly impressed with your tenacity and ferocious "go get 'em" approach to mastering busking. Good luck Rickybobby....if you continue with the focus and drive that I believe you have...the world is yours. By the way, I'm a 29 year old guy, ex-Navy, who just got out of a really nasty divorce. Magic is what I've turned to for rescue. I'm working on a 2nd Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering...my first degree was in English. But deep down inside my heart, I know that Magic is my calling. Like they say, "The man doesn't pick the job...the job picks the man." Only now do I truly understand what that means. Magic has chosen me...the guy...Magic has chosen you...Magic has chosen all of us. So accept it, appreciate it, and harness the power it gives you by performing as much as possible NOW. Do not hesitate to act. Fortune favors the bold. And, as my father always told me, "no balls...no blue-chips." Heavy hats to all, Hans
