Well, if you came to the Café for clarity...mistake number one. But Danny is a real worker and knows his stuff, and I don't think he's talking 'religious' nature of effects, or you starting a religion, but, there is a gap between those who preach presentation and live/die by it, and those that don't, and there are those that do both. So, from your posts you sound like you are really harking on presentational angles. But, to cite D.O. for you, you could also be polishing a t*rd.
As for points and the Café go, earlier you state this: "Dan and dave buck do some excellent eye candy, but all you'd be able to recall was "that guy did some crazy things with those cards." you're creating a forgettable act." Then in your last post you say: "I'll do some stuff from dan and dave buck, then do paul cummins punken droker." Seems kind of counter intuitive. I mean, I get your point, and understand it, but, to those reading the thread, well, don't assume everyone will. |

Okay, thanks for you help. I would like to say I don't believe I'm polishing a terd. I am a worker, I work weekly and do corporate gigs as well. As for the Dan and Dave buck comment. If you do all flourishy stuff you have "quick hands" but you're name and face are forgotten. If you just do long story effects people can't concentrate for that long. So if you combine the two, you hit everyone's senses and create a truly magical act.
I understand Danny is worker and I value all the information he wants to give. It actually sounds to me like we're on the same page. I would just hope that with so many people reading this that we might actually influence others. I know it seems ridiculous here at the Café, but It's worth a shot. Thanks Guys Pete

Pete,
That's the thing, I think you do have it...and you are not polishing a t*rd, but, I think many are. And if they are, I don't think they have enough sense to know it. You should really creep around food for thought more, it's where a lot of stuff like this gets hashed out, and hashed out again, and again, and again. But it's good, and it makes you think. Hope to see you there. |

Firstly, I'm not dodging anything. Sept. and Oct. are my busiest months of the year with 4 b'days in Sept. and then Thanksgiving during the first week of Oct. In addition I run my own business, so work takes precedent. Pete did you ever stop to think that the reason I didn't do more from a presentational stand was because I didn't feel it needed it; I felt the illusion was best performed as I did it. Why I need to explain this to a worker is beyond me. Some effects benefit from heavy production and presentation, but many don't and in fact presentations could suffer with added embellishments. Regarding the bottle production, as one of my specs said, "that would be handy at a party to magically make booze appear; specs aren't as slow as some of us might believe they are. The ART of verbal BS is to make the specs feel that it makes sense, not the magi. It's simply another form of acting; which is the cornerstone of magic. you have to properly infuse some truth in it so that it has the desired effect on the audience. Honest to Pete (pun inteded) I really don't see what the beef is; for as long as I've known this trick, it has been performed silent and usually as part of a longer routine; maybe that’s what bothers you, that it isn't in a routine. To see me perform an effect that requires heavy presentation and verbal BS please see my recently posted video entitled "Chopped". When it's needed I apply it, when it isn't I don't.
