As I was working with my 3D lighting design program, I ran into this question...
Is it better to have one tree of lights, placed directly in front of the stage, or two trees on either side of the stage? With both, there are of course advantages and disadvantages, one of the main ones, being shadows. The way I designed it was to have 6 PAR56's and a Leko (750W) on a tree directly in front of the stage, and hanging on the back truss would be 4 PAR38's and two scanners. Seen here: But overall, my question is what is the best lighting setup for the average traveling performer/illusionist? Thanks, Sam Pearce |

My rule of thumb was always equal on both sides (right and left). But what you have designed would probably suit you for portable use. Just me mindful of placing your equipment within reach of the audience.
FWIW Cheers!

Personally, for my new show I have 6 par 64 lights and 2 500 watt lekos on a tree in the back of the theater with a warm wash and a cool wash. Then 4 50 watt 6x9s on either side with magenta and cyan gels. I also have an on stage and back light system made up of moving head intelligent washes and spots.
Let me know if you have any other tech questions. --Dave |

Good morning, Sam!
I'm an Audio guy, and I've been out of the lighting world for many years, but ... Having a stand in front would be a problem for sight-lines. Also, check out the McCandless Method. 1 2 3
