Up till now whenever someone asked me what figure am I making I just told him to wait and see or to guess. With kids it worked fine (sort of) as they immediatly throw all sorts of guesses to the air and it seemed they would rather keep throwing guesses than having me stop them and say, you got it!
But with adults, I get the feeling sometimes that not telling them what is the figure and letting them see it for themselves at the end may be a bit... not right. I don't know what is it exactly but I get the feeling I might come of as a patronizing balloon guy or something. As a friend pointed out to me, there are several reason to DO tell them in advance what am I making. Let's say I tell them I am making a caterpillar and then I take out three balloons, two green and one yellow. Immediately they must be thinking to themselves 'well, how is he going to make a caterpillar from THREE balloons? what part will be the yellow one?' and so on. So not telling them will be interesting as they will have to see if they can recognize what I am making and in what stage will they recognize it and in some cases they will think one thing and be surprised at the finished figure. But telling them in advance will be interesting in a different way since they will be thinking about how what am I doing relates to the finished figure. They still don't know exactly what the finished figure looks like, so part of the charm and surprise of the finished figure will still be there. Do you normally tell in advance what is the figure you are making or not?

Good question!
when the kids start guessing I give it to the one who gets it right, grown ups can play also. this only lasts long enough for me to regain control of the line. when only working for grown ups I only tell them when I do some thing impossible. Like my mouse juggling 5 balls wearing sun glasses while riding a unicycle out of one balloon. (I love one balloon stuff) otherwise I leave them guessing.

I usually let them guess. It keeps them involved yelling out their guesses.

I always tell them that I am making a "question maker" and that I see it is working just fine.
