Julian -
Some of the full information about your "minimum" $525 price is missing from your post (probably an oversight). The point is that you offer 1 to 2 school shows for that price (half-day), not one show only. How many customers actually take you up on a single show, for their fee? I imagine that most, if not all, have two shows. You also encourage them to have two shows. Psychologically, in their mind, they are getting two shows at $262.50 each, or two for $525. Also, for a full day ($800, which can be split between two customers), you offer 3-5 school shows. How many customers actually take you up on that minimum? - Donald

Donald,
You are correct that most schools do take both shows. But I actually ENJOY performing. The "work" part of what I do is waking up and gettting dressed, packing my stuff into the truck, unloading at the school, setting up the show, re-packing everything once I'm finished, driving all the way to and from the gig, etc. etc. Once I'm up and running, it makes little difference to me (some, but very little) if I do one show or two. Performing is the fun part. But to answer your question, only about 5% pay my half-day fee and only use one of the two shows, and they are almost always very small schools. I also only sell about 5% of my schools on a half-day basis. Almost all schools book at least a full-day. And yes, I have also had a full-day booking ($800) that was a 9 AM show and a 1 PM show (which is $400 per show if you want to break it down), but I still got the full fee. I admit this is rare, but since you asked, that's the answer. There are many other strategic reasons for my pricing (e.g. Because I usually get them to split into two groups I almost always have much easier audience sizes to manage as opposed to a gymnasium full of 900+ kids, The full-day pricing encourages group bookings, etc.) So again, if you want to break my full-day fee into a "per show" average that's fine, but the bottom line is that at the end of the day I usually have $800, sometimes $1,050 if I book two different half-days ($525 + $525), and always AT LEAST $525. I know that isn't as much as some make, but working 200 days a year, it comes out to a pretty decent living, and still gives me almost as many days off each year as I work. I think we are getting off topic however, as the original question was about whether or not to post prices (not how MUCH to charge or WHAT format works best). You then asked if anyone charged a significant fee and still posted prices successfully. If my fees are not significant enough to qualify for your inquiry you can disregard my comments. --Julian Franklin |

I can't re-set some of my school shows as fast as others (larger scale), so I usually limit it to 2 a day. I also rarely encounter schools with more than 350-400 students.
Different styles of running a business. I enjoy reading your posts. I still think "it depends" is the best answer, and also "test and track" is also important. - Donald P.S. I have tried rates in mailings before.

Julian, I think you hit the nail on the head with the "tipping point". I am not as established in my market as I would like, and I am happy to sell over the phone. Also schools are different than BD parties.

Wow Julian very impressive workload!
I read your column every month in the Linking Ring and I am pleased to see that are a member of the Café. How long are your shows? How many times do you perform at the same school during the year? Is it repeated with the same clients the following year? So many questions, so little time. Thanks Julian Truly, Christopher |

Christopher,
You asked... How long are your shows? 45-55 minutes. I reset very quickly. IMO this is paramount to working school shows. You must be able to reset almost as quickly (or even faster!) than they can get one group of kids in and the next group out. How many times do you perform at the same school each year? Usually no more than twice a year. Most of my clients hire me only once per year. There are about 2% that hire me to perform twice or more per year. Is it repeated with the same clients the following year? I assume you are asking about how many clients book me year after year? If that is the question, the answer (for me) is that about 70% of my business is repeat from the previous year. I change every aspect of my show each year, so it feels like a new show. I'd love to discuss this more, but I really feel like we've gotten off the original topic, which was about whether or not to post your price in a public way. If you are interested in my school and library show business, feel free to visit www.KidShowBusiness.com or PM me at any time. I don't check every day, but I will get back to you ASAP. --Julian Franklin |
